Boden Sizes

How do boden sizes compare? DS is a very small 7. I just bought him a cardi from M&S 5/6 and it fits but only just so a bit reluctant to buy same size for the summer. Do boden come up big or small. I'm ordering the 7/8 but am worried it will swamp him!

i think quite big - but i've got a dd and she's only 3. might be different for boys and for older age group. the 3-4 stuff is only just beginning to fit her, and the trousers are still way too long, but she's growing out of the 2-3 stuff. She's 3 and 3 months, but is tall for her age and people are always saying that they thought she was older.
If you click through to the boden site from this one, you can always send it back free of charge.....

spykid · 08/02/2006 19:28

ds's are tallish for their age and I find boden sizes generous
I would still go for 7/8, at their prices I want lots of wear out of items!

jenkel · 08/02/2006 20:15

I would say that they are good for chubbier kids but not so good for tall kids.

My dd is tall for her age, 3 1/2 and I would like her size 4 boden dresses to be just a little longer.

jenkel · 08/02/2006 20:16

just read the other messages and looks like I've found the complete oposite to what other people think, so sorry but probably not very helpful

Hazellnut · 08/02/2006 20:16

Now.... call me contrary but I have so far found them on the small side for my dd - but then she is only 12 months but is teeny and 6-12 month trousers are on the short side on her (and she REALLY isn't the size of a 1 year old) - perhaps it gets bigger though as sizes last longer..... so ignore me !!

mrsflowerpot · 08/02/2006 20:22

DS is nearly 5 and small for his age too - he is currently wearing Boden size 3-4 and they fit him fine, and will probably fit him until it's time to get summer clothes I would think. I find it bigger than M&S stuff generally. DS has short legs and I do find the trousers come up long on him, even when they are not enormously oversized on the waist.

They do have good measurement guides on the website - including different measurements for individual items I think - which are helpful.

mrsflowerpot · 08/02/2006 20:24

yes, Hazellnut, funnily enough having said that about the boys' clothes I am finding the same with the baby girls' clothes - dd is 8 months and I'm not convinced the 6-12 months stuff will fit her all the way to her first birthday.

Hazellnut · 08/02/2006 22:48

good to hear I'm not going mad Mrs fp !!

Piffle · 08/02/2006 22:57

it varies wildly
the free returns thing ain't a coincidence!
dd is 3 (very small) and currently has their trouers in 12-18 mths mostly 18-24 but some 2-3 yrs.
Plus their sleeves in winter are long! The tops are short in length too.
My ds is a large 12 and he fits their 13-14 stuff and its big on him which is unusual so I reckon for older kids the sizing is bigger

GDG · 08/02/2006 23:11

I think big. Ds1 is just coming up to 5 and the Boden tops he has and fit nicely are 2-3. I bought some 3-4 in the sale and it's too big. He is small for age (on 20th centile though).

Ds2 is just over 3 and he's in 2-3 as well and he's more average size for his age.

Ds3 is average size for his age and is 18 months - he is in 12-18 month tops. 18-24 would be way too big atm.

I find them big for women too - I'm a size 8-10 but all my tops from there are an 8.

Milge · 08/02/2006 23:15

I find the tops to be generous round the middle, but very short in the body. The trousers are very generous in length, but a bit stingy around the bottom. For example, dd aged 2 was in 3-4 tops but 18-24m trousers for length, and 3-4 years for waist. The net result is my mil has to turn up her boden trousers to stop them dragging under her shoes...

CountessDracula · 08/02/2006 23:16

dd is pretty big (75th centile for height and weight) aged 3.5 and they are pretty much spot on for her, if a tad on the big side

Trouser lengths vary insanely though - i recently got two pairs, one was a foot too long the other about and inch too short! PAH

Clary · 08/02/2006 23:43

I find it varies according to the sex/style of clothes.
ds1 is 6.5 but tall, long legs, and wears Boden 7-8 trousers, 5-6 miles too short. His 5-6 T shirts getting small but 7-8 ones are still a bit big IYSWIM.
DD is 4.5 and happily in a 3-4 dress. But 3-4 T shirts (fitted-ish) are too small. 5-6 are better but a bit long in the sleeves. (ie I agree with Piff about the girls' tops)
ds2 (almost 3 but shortish) is OK in 2-3. 18-24 mo trousers and fleece now getting a bit small. Fleece is a magic one that has never been out of circulation and all 3 children seem to have worn for about 2 yrs each!
Does this help? I would still buy 7-8 for yr ds, or he might not get the wear out of it.

Clary · 08/02/2006 23:44

OTOH ds1's new coat is 9-10. i bought 7-8 originally (in last yr's sale) but found it was exactly the same size as the 5-6 coat (also Boden) he was then wearing. Bonkers eh! So I hastily exchanged it.
DS1 very proud to be wearing a 9-10 coat. No way would it fit a 10 yo.

Katherine · 09/02/2006 09:10

Thanks all. Have ordered the 7/8 size as DS got so excited at the thought of wearing the right age group clothes. And they are cropped things for summer so he may grow some more yet. Like you say I can always send them back

vickiyumyum · 09/02/2006 09:41

ds1 is skinny and average height, he is nearly 9 but in boden i still buy him 7/8 with quite a bit of growing room left, whereas ds2 is tall and rugby player build, def not fat! he is just 4 and wears 5/6 in boden sizes and i'm sure by next year they will be sharing a wardrobe as ds2 gets bigger i swear ds1 gets smaller!

binker · 23/02/2006 18:04

boys sizes seem to come up quite big at Boden - but then my ds is a small eight yr old - he has trousers for 7-8 yr olds and these have to be rolled up at ends and the waists are usually quite loose...
