Ear thermometers

Does anyone use one of these? I've seen that Boots have the Braun one in their sale, but it's still £30. Anyone know if the cheaper ones are any good? Would really like one, but it seems like such a lot of money. Thanks

detta i was advised by a nurse and a doctor not to get one (independantly of each other!)

they both said that they can be pretty inaccurate because it's difficult to get the probe in the right place. partly because as a health professional you know exactly how far in you can poke it, whereas parents tend to be a bit more wary!

they both said that an underarm thermometer was a much better idea

I've got the Braun one - money well spent IMO

We have the raun one and it is fantastic. You can take their temp while they are asleep.....not so important now as the kids are older, but it used to be a great help.

I've had mine for about 6 years and it is still going strong

Don't entirely trust mine, although it was expensive. Results vary vastly if you don't quite position it right.
Tend to use an old mercury one under the arm or just trust my own judgement.

I bought a Samsung one in Asda a few years ago for £20. Works perfectly well and I wouldn't be without it. Think I'd have paid £30 for it, but no more - well worth having one.

thanks for all your advice. bearing in mind what starlover has said, can you get digital ones that go under the arm as well? or could you use the ear one like that? (probably being v thick now!)

yeah you can get digital underarm ones... boots do them for about £8

blondehelen · 07/02/2006 20:58

Agree with starlover-there was some research done about them which suggested they were inaccurate. As a result the hospital I work at phased them out. You can get a digital one for about £10 which can be used underarm or oral

You can always rely on Mumsnet to come up with the answers! thanks everyone
