6 year old Audi has died. Would you contact Audi about it? Bit of an AIBU.

In 2006 we bought an Audi S4 saloon. It is a lovely car and packs a serious punch in its performance. It has 4.2L V8 engine and 339BHP. I think it cost £48,000. We bought it because a) my DH is a bit of a petrolhead and this was his dream car, and b) we tought that it would last for years and years.

Anyway, we've used it as our family car since we bought it and not really done anything major in it bar one trip to the south of France and back and a few trips up to Yorkshire. It has been serviced regularly, has never been in an accidednt and only has 36,000 miles on the clock so it should keep going for a long time to come.

Last week it shuddered to a halt for no apparent reason. It was towed to a garage who have come back saying it needs a new engine as it has completely died. A new engine will cost £12,000 but the car is worth £15,000.

I think we should ask Audi what they can do about it? Surely a car of this calibre and condition should keep going for at least 10 years or more? What sort of redress, if any, might we have?

"engine as it has completely died"

Too vague.

Has the cambelt broken? Did it run out of oil?

What do you know about the garage that said this?

CheeseandPickledOnion · 27/03/2012 17:30

Yeah what piglet said.

Has it been regularly serviced and can you prove this? At Audi or regular garage? All those things will have bearing on this.

I would want an opinion from an Audi garage, a detailed report, before I made a decision I think.

36k is equivalent to around three years motoring. If it has been serviced as the schedule states then yes, I would contact Audi.

ShatnersBassoon · 27/03/2012 17:40

Don't accept that garage's word for it. It sounds like a highly unusual thing, to write off an engine with three year's motoring on the clock, so I would want to make sure the engine was beyond repair.

Get Audi to have a look at it.

It has always been serviced by Audi, as per the schedule. It was towed to a local garage who specialise in Audi, BMW etc.

DH said he didn't really understand what the bloke was saying (he's not mechanical) and is waiting for a full written report..
