a handcream that will nourish my nails and cuticles

when i was getting married, years ago, and my hands and nails were horrible, I religiously applied Clarins Hand and Nail cream and the results were fantastic.

I now want to get my hands and nails back looking good but need to have about 4 handcreams on the go (car, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom) to make sure that I apply it regularly but the cheapest I can get the Clarins is £12 a shot.

Can anyone recommend another product that might do as good a job but for less cost?

TIA

neutrogena one (good for skin)
pink vaseline one (brill for nails)

I like the Body Shop's almond oil hand rescue cream.

Or get three less pricey ones and a Clarins one and use that overnight w/ cotton gloves? v sexy look!

am a beauty therapist do mainly manicures and pedicures i always use vaseline hand cream put it on whenever my hands have been in water and try once a week putting loads on and getting cotton gloves and sleeping in them it really helps it all to soak in and rubbing almond oil into cuticles every morning also helps. get a buffer as well and buff your nails in the eves when you watching eastenders or whatever, it gets rid of all the ridges and boosts the blood supply so encourages them to grow

thanks very much for the replies and the extra tips nulnulcat.
Will I get almond oil from most chemists do you know or do i need a specialist?
Do i have to rub the oil in in the morning? Cant I do that at night too?

all chemists should sell it its usually with the aromatherapy oils, you can get cuticle oils but they are much more expensive and do exactly the same job its the same with hand cream yes the clarins one is very nice but good old vaseline the pink one does exactly the same job personally i prefer it! if you can do it 2 x a day even better the main thing is to keep your cuticles in good condition coz the oil soaks through to the bit of your nail you cant see which is the living bit

Someone on here recommended the Body Shop hemp salve, and it's the bee's knees! BRILL stuff.

I've been using that and I've found to be lovely for my hands but not having much impact on my nails.

I second the Clarins one. I usually get a tube of it bought for me on B'days etc.

It's the best one I have ever found if I use anything cheaper or in fact different I get old lady hands.

The pink vaseline one's great for nails. Got a mention in In Style's Best of beauty guide, even.

mckenzie
if u want to really get your nails stronger then use nailtiques nail protein, i really did have the weakest nails and over 2 weeks it does work

plus according to the beauty bible dr hauscka nail neem oil is fabulous for nail and cuticle
and a woman who grooms horses daily swears by it.

both a wee bit costly in comparison to the almond oil but work quickly

nulnulcat · 02/02/2006 21:38

nice nails is all about maintenance not everyone can afford proffessional manicures but regular manicures really do help and you can do it yourself at home and little things like wear gloves for washing up gardending or anything that exposes your hands to prolonged contact with water not easy with kids i know

I think i need to buy some of those glamourous gloves that the ladies wear on How Clean is Your House and then i might remember to wear them!
Does wearing the cotton gloves in bed with handcream underneath really improve the results?

yes its brilliant its the next best thing to getting a hot paraffin wax manicure the gloves keep your hands warm so the pores open up for the cream to really sink in same effect as deep heat hair conditioning treatments your hands will feel so soft the next day. hubby may think you are barking tho!!

Pink Vaseline one is fantastic, not only for hands and nails, I put it on my (shrivelled, hen-like) neck too and the skin feels gorgeous afterwards

nulnulcat · 02/02/2006 21:53

putting loads of cream on your feet then socks on in bed is also really good

mckenzie · 03/02/2006 15:05

I do that already nulnulcat so tonight DH is going to get a lovely surprise when I'm wearing my usual socks and gloves as well!!!

nulnulcat - should I use a nail strengthener or am I better off leaving my nails clear so that the handcream etc can sink in?
