For a present Smile

She is nearly 70
Eyesight fine but fine for a 70 yo IYKWIM
Not super techno-savvy

Wants a kindle - prob because it's the one she's heard of
Wants classics. Serious classics. "Will I be able to get Proust on the kindle" type questions

What do you think is the best option? I don't think she'd be happy with the WHS version, I forget what it's called, as she does like a label. So ideally a Kindle so she can say to her friends "I've got a Kindle, it's marvellous" (yes I know, but that's how it is Grin).

Any help really appreciated Smile

I got my mum (60) a kindle and she loves it - she is not tech savvy in the slightest but finds it easy to add books to it

Meant to say it was the kindle without the keyboard the cheaper one

BrianButterfield · 16/03/2012 20:21

I say just get the Kindle, tbh. It's easy to use, Amazon give good customer service (just got mine replaced due to a battery problem although it was out of warranty, no quibbling at all) and you can get tonnes of classics for free without even using your computer.

And by getting the Kindle you know there are all sorts of lovely cases, reading lights and so on that will work with it. Also it's very easy to change the font size if she has problems reading smaller print.

Kindle.

Lots of the classics are free

SardineQueen · 16/03/2012 20:55

Oh this is exactly what i was hoping for! Excellent advice. I will proceed via the john lewis website (where did you get it? Oh a kindle from John Lewis! etc) and check out cheap keyboard free kindles.

Mum says thank you in advance Smile

Looks good to me. I know the others might be a tad cheaper, or have a colour screen (unnecessary IMO) etc etc but like you say, it's nice to have the proper thing from the proper place, isn't it?

SardineQueen · 16/03/2012 21:55

Well quite

She can read Proust on her Kindle from John Lewis

That will make her terribly happy.

What will make her even happier, I suspect, is that she can give up a lifetime of catholic guilt about ever doing anything for fun rather than improvement, realise people can't see what she's reading, and feel a bit more free in what she reads!

Smile
