Warranties on used cars. Are they worth while?

We are looking to buy another car. Not new but more expensive than any we have bought before. Garage are offering us a warranty and a gap. Not got any prices yet but they reckon it will cost us between 20 and 30 a month. Has anyone done this? Was it worthwhile?

That sounds like quite a lot, but I've no idea if it's normal. You could get one with a long standard warranty, like a Kia or Hyundai - or have you already chosen the car? It might be worth a search on the money saving expert forums.

We got a 3 month warranty when we bought a second hand car recently - it wasn't extra £ but was included in the price.

It has definitely been worth it in our case as the wheels were all corroding and needed specialist treatment (luckily we spotted it within the 3 months) - cost all covered by seller under the warranty.

As with any warranty/insurance, it's a bit of a gamble as to whether you will end up needing to claim on it or not.

Thanks. We will get 90 free days anyway. The extended warranty can last as long as we keep that car but it will be reviewed after the first 3 years. The cars we are looking at are too old to have any standard warranty left habbibu Grin

It sounds as if it would be useful but money is a bit tight (as it is for most people these days) and the car is already more expensive than our previous one.

Ah ok. Well I'd reckon that anything really awful will show up in the first three months (but do keep an eye out for any "symptoms" of something about to go wrong) so I probably wouldn't bother paying out after that.

If you buy a car from a garage you do not need a warranty. They have to fix it within the first year if it goes wrong.

I would consult trading standards, OP. Talk thru what the warranty says and they will tell you what are your rights under law, anyway, regardless of "warranty". 20-30 quid/month sounds too high, too me.
