Why does my dd1 insist on buying My Little Ponies when she is too old for them and never plays with them?

She has £12 to spend on stuff this afternoon and I have promised to take her shopping. She is hopeless at choosing stuff and ALWAYS without fail chooses a My Little pony thing that she opens, arranges on her shelf, then never touches.

What can I steer her gently towards? She doesnt like dolls.

Can get hama bead horse theme sets (and dogs I think)
Have steered my dd (same age and interests!) towards collecting the schleich model horses, they are only about £3 each so can collect lots and you can buy jumps, grooming stuff, car and trailer, dressage arenas etc, she spends ages playing with them, naming them etc.

Just a quick hijack, I used to live in Weymouth and go shopping in Dorchester for a change.

My little Pony PC game. DD has one (she is 4) and it is a bit too complex for her, but basically you have to train and play with your Pony a bit like a tamagotchi

Enid · 30/01/2006 17:58

That sounds great spagblog do you have an online link?

Right in the end she wanted TWO my little ponies but I put my foot down. So she got the cuddly one (reduced in the sale) and a box of Hama beads to make ponies and kittens with. She was unsure about the beads but has been happily engrossed in following the diagrams since we got home

oh and a sheet of horse stickers

I can empathise with her Enid - sounds just like women who buy glamourous dresses and expensive shoes and then put them in the wardrobe and wear jeans all the time... shopping for the life they want not for the life they have.

MLP game here - sounds good and only £5

Enid · 30/01/2006 18:51

fabbo
have ordered

thats it in a nutshell mrsbadger - its the aquisition of these blasted things rather than the play value

Spagblog · 30/01/2006 21:38

Mind you, is 6 too old for MLP? I should think that she is the perfect age for them...When they first came out in the 80s I must have been about that age if not older and I loved them.
She probably gets some fulfillment from having them arranged on her shelf, don't you think?

Aero · 31/01/2006 09:38

Agree with spagblog - it seems she just likes them and gets pleasure from arranging then on her shelf. Dd is like this with fairies, although has just recently started to play with them occasionally. She is 5.5. I was like that with all sorts of soft toys for years as a child/teenager. Course, now, I hate them and secretly groan when Aunty X produces another dust gatherer - lol.
Don't think she's too old for MLP though - she could still play all sorts of imaginitive games with them if she wanted to, but it appears she just likes looking at them. Ah well..........

Beetroot · 31/01/2006 09:42

If she likes them then let her buy them. It will soon be Green day!!!
