what should I cover our tiled floor with while baby is learning to walk?

We have ceramic tiles in the conservatory, which is where we spend most of our time with the baby. Need to put something squashy down as temporary measure while she's toddling about. Don't want to use underlay because worried it will leave a residue on the (cream coloured) tiles.

Whatever we put down can't be fixed to the floor

Any bright ideas?

a big heavy rug?

Furball · 29/01/2006 20:52

At our toddler group they have something like This

chicagomum · 29/01/2006 20:53

We used those large foam jigsaw like things with pop out numbers in a big square with a couple of strips of anti slip stuff you put under rugs.

OK , the things furball just did the link too.

OH and H&M do those socks too (a lot cheaper than Gap).

We have all tiled or wooden floors downstairs in our house and neither of my two hurt themselves, as far as I remember - they mostly fell onto their bottoms. I found sharp corners on cupboards or tables more of a problem. I guess a big rug might be best, but then a toddler could trip over the edge of it, or on a ruck!

JiminyCricket · 29/01/2006 21:10

blooming marvellous do the foam jigsaw playmats - two sets would cover a large area - or b & q and range had some cheapo ones in recently

mogwai · 29/01/2006 21:17

Pruni, baby Mogwai is 7 months now and just about to crawl off the rug!

She has lots of energy. Could do with a hamster wheel ideally

The jigsaw things - do they come up easily? Our conservatory is part of our kitchen and it transforms back into an adult space after baby has gone to bed. Not sure I can live with an alphabet floor , especially when we have dinner guests

The conservatory is the thoroughfare to the garden so they would soon get dirty.

I wonder about carpet tiles? What's on the back of them? Could baby Mogwai not hurt her head if she fell off the sofa onto a thin layer of carpet tiles?

I live in Italy and my flat is all tiled floors. Actually I agree with Satine that bumps from furniture are a much more frequent occurance, when he was learning to walk he always managed to fall on his bum. Oc now ds is 18 months and has learnt to climb on all the furniture, hitting head on floor much more likely eek. Non slip socks are fab though.

mogwai · 29/01/2006 21:30

I suppose the bumping the head thing is more of an issue at the moment because she keeps falling backwards or sidewards from sitting position.

Did your children never climb onto sofas and fall off?

we have mostly tiles all over, abd wood in bedrooms & all 3 kids have survived without any dramas or special purchases.

lapsedrunner · 30/01/2006 08:46

We have wooden floors/tiles throughout. Never put anything special down , they adapt quickly!

lapsedrunner · 30/01/2006 08:48

Mogwai - they soon learn that falling off the sofa is a bad idea. Sorry I sound like cruel mum, but over here hard floors are standard so no one thinks anything of it.

satine · 30/01/2006 13:40

I agree with lapsedrunner, although I know it sounds a bit harsh. The only injury either of mine sustained was a cut eyebrow from the corner of a cupboard door. No falling onto heads!
