Clip on ones.can slip, and if they're left on and slip round so that the bulb touches the duet / pillow, they can start a fire. (Happened to my grandmother - her pillow was smouldering when mum found it.)
IKEA do reading lights which screw into the wall, but still plug into a socket. I've used those for my children.

We have the Bunky it doesn't slip and is very safe.

Thanks, how is the Bunky attached? It looks like some kind of straps?

i second the bunkybed light- switches off after 1.5hrs - cool to the touch- and doesn't move at all. its a pita to attach (or so i found) but their helpline is great and it ended on the note that i had to use a lot brute force on it!

We have the John Lewis Leo. It's an LED which means it won't burn anything and it won't break easily.

Have you got bunk beds that you really love? I'm trying to decide what to get for the DC and would love to find out what's worked for other people.

I really like the look of the Parisot Tam Tam bunk beds (or the very similar looking Vista bunk beds from the GLTC) but a bit worried that they might not be that sturdy - they seem to be made of chipboard with veneer (have I got that right?) Does anyone have them - how have they lasted?

Also, given that DS is 5 and DD is 1 (planning slightly ahead here), how long might I reasonably expect them to be sharing bunk beds anyhow?

Thanks in advance.

TT

Oops, meant to start a thread. Will try again!

DD has a couple on her bunk beds from IKEA. They plug in, but attach to the bunk beds with a screw clamp thing.

We've got the bunky lights. Bit of a pita to attach - and they don't attach easily to the bed we've got (Parisot Tam Tam) because none of the bits of wood are narrow enough to use the main fixings (the straps) so we had to use the fixing that you screw in which damages the bed a bit. Small point but a bit annoying. But they do seem safe (cool to touch)

And for Tanty: I bought the Parisot Tam Tam for DD 5 and DS 2.5. It's great. I think it looks really good and sturdy (not particularly veneery although of course it is). I wouldn't say it looks cheap. It's not all woody and traditional looking like the ones in Aspace but it's not meant to look like that iyswim. I don't think it looks cheaper - it just looks different. I do have some criticisms which are

  1. the underside of the top bunk is not painted which bugs me although DS2.5 who is the only one who can see the raw chipboard obviously is entirely oblivious to this and

  2. it's borderline impossible to change the sheets. The mattresses sort of slot in underneath the shelving bits so you can't really just slip your hand down around the mattress to get the sheet back on. You actually have to more or less take the mattress out of the bed to get the sheet on. But I get round that by hardly ever washing sheets!

So far overall I'm really pleased with it and DD loves having her collection of toys and books up there. DS doesn't have much on his shelves yet because he's not so into his collections of stuff yet but I'm sure he will love it in due course. I hope to force them into sharing for as long as possible but even once they are not sharing I think the bed will still be useful for sleepovers etc.

Bunky. It's annoying to spend what for me is a lot of money on something that is so plasticky, but it does the job and feels safe.
