Hello

I am not very optimistic about this thread having looked at others but here goes!!!

My brother (he of more money than sense Wink), generously bought surprise kindles for my DDs this Xmas........

The oldest is 8 1/2 and have found a few books for her to read. I am seeing it positively - shes finally really getting into her reading and this is another way (along with mags, school books, second hand books, library) of encouraging her to do so. I wouldn't have picked to get her one so young but we can build on it and hopefully make good use of the kindle over time

The youngest is ... 5, today. I am at a loss. Cant find any books for her to read on the kindle. Does anyone have any ideas. She is quite a good reader but only in reception so books would still be basic and quite "disposable" as she hopefully moves on quickly through increased ability. So hopefully cheap / free books!!! dont worry I'll supervise her after the threads I have read about damage to kindles....

If I cannot get any books for her to read herself I could buy some to read to her - again any ideas? I hear that illustrations are often lost when using kindles so would be useful if knew of books where this does not happen

Finally if all else fails then apparently you can play (hopefully educational) games with the kindle... any ideas

I just hate waste I would like to make the best use of the gifts that I can, so suggestions gratefully received!

(ps how do you know which type of kindle you've got and whats the difference Blush)

My 7 and 9 year olds got kindles for xmas and they have been brilliant - particularly because you can check books out of the library onto them (here in the US). My 6 year old didn't get one (to encourage her to read) so 2 months on this has fired her up and now I am thinking of passing mine to her (we all got the super basic cheap ones). I know I haven't answered your question, I'll have a think and come back. A lot of the books which are out of copyright are free and if you have a kindle which does the audio function (i.e not the basic one) then you can choose the option where the books are read out loud. Try amazon and searching for free kindle books - all the Beatrix Potters etc are free I think which a 5 yr old might like read to them.

PS have a look on the amazon website - you should be able to tell from the pictures which kindles you have!

What sort of books does she normally read SWBN? Would she be able to read something like this or maybe this, both free or maybe a Horrid Henry Early Reader at £2.99.

Its fairly easy to tell which kindle you have, the 3 has a keyboard at the bottom and you can play audio books on it, the 4 is smaller, doesn't have the keyboard and has no audio facility. If its 3G you should be able to download and sync books anywhere, with the wifi version its only when you are connected to wifi.

As for games, am watching with interest Smile.

I think you should keep look after it until she's old enough to appreciate it.

or sell it and buy her lots of books

kindles aren't really suitable for anything other than reading books imo

Thanks very much for the replies to date

ALthough the suggestions are a little advanced for her I can at least read them to her and hopefully it wont be long before she can read them

Have established got the basic kindle so no audio, drat

I will focus on books to read to her if there wont be any for her to read herself. I think she will be using it in a year or 2 as she loves to copy off her sister

This idea of getting free books checked out on from the library - is this only in the US then - cant see anything on our local library website sadly???

TheFoosa - yes very tempted to sell / hide / use myself. Sadly DD2's memory is way to good for that and she keeps on asking when she is going to be using it. So far DD1 has to use hers in secret!!!

And my brother is visiting back from Oz later this year and may well ask them how they are doing with them....

Thanks again, any more ideas also welcome!!!

Most of these books are free, I am not sure DS is quite old enough to appreciate them, but i thought it was worth getting them anyway.
