Can you all please help me to furnish my house?

I've decided that after being here 6 months I HAVE to get my act together and start to decorate/furnish my house. But I need help.

I still need to find a clock to finish off the guest room. Something like this taht CD found would be perfect, but I need it from the UK, and only want one!

And next I'm moving onto the hallway/landing. I'm painting it grey, with one wall in silver, and up/down lighters to wash that wall. I have a very contemorary sofa under the stairs, an oak floor and beigish suede curtains hung from Chrome poles. There is an small cloakroom which you walk through to get to the loo.

I need:
A coat/hat rack (or two) to put in the cloakroom - preferably with hooks and a shelf, but it needs to be narrow. And contemporary. Oak or metal.
Shoe racks - preferably matching
Door handles - I need to replace every single bit of the horrid tacky brass door furniture. Anybody know any good websites?
A full length mirror in a sort of antiqued silver paint finish

I've spent the last hour or so googling and drawn a blank. And I'm getting very frustrated!

Oh and if any Cambridge people know anywhere I can get second hand furniture I'd be grateful. I need a couple of occasional tables that look old, but not valuable ones because I want to paint them

for furniture see if there is a freecycle in your area. (freecycle.org)

Jackstini · 22/01/2006 16:11

Check on ebay for door handles. My sister got some fam contemporary stainless steel ones for about a tenner a pair.
In fact check for everything on ebay! Now there are so many shops using it for extra sales you can click 'new items only' in the advanced search and get all sorts of brand new stuff as a bargain

charliecat · 22/01/2006 16:12

freecycle.net for the tables..

Jackstini · 22/01/2006 16:14

in fact look \link {http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&from=R10&satitle=door+handles+steel+-kitchen&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&bs=Search&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fgtp=&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D3&saprclo=&saprchi=\at these}

Jackstini · 22/01/2006 16:15

here

For what you are describing, mail order companies like Ocean and The Cotswald Company sound right.

I bought some very groovy modern brushed steel handles for my made to measure wardrobes from a company called AFL www.afl-birmingham.co.uk
Number is 0121 359 0958

They have a brochure called Quattro Door Furniture.Sort of industrial style.
If you ring, ask if you are speaking to Julie. She was excellent-brilliant service.

Dwell are good for modern stuff - a bit like Ocean, but a bit cheaper, I think.

How about this or this for a clock? Neither exactly what CD found - does it need to be smaller than those?

JackieNo · 22/01/2006 16:51

No shelf, but came across this and love it.

JackieNo · 22/01/2006 17:05

And not sure that it's quite right (and the website looks rather expensive, despite the lack of prices) but how about this for a mirror? Possibly not sleek enough?

JackieNo · 22/01/2006 17:12

Getting a bit carried away here, sorry . How about this for a mirror - in the largest size? Or this from the same site? In fact there are quite a few on that site

MrsBadger · 22/01/2006 17:35

for doorhandles etc, you can't beat Screwfix - we replaced all our nasty brass ones with their designer Italian range for less then we'd have paid in B&Q, and it makes such a difference.

If you can bear Ikea, they have a 30cm deep coat/hatrack that fits the bill. And a matching shoe rack

and this mirror is neither silver painted nor distressed, but is very beautiful.

MaryBS · 23/01/2006 07:27

Theres a VERY active freecycle in Cambridge:

groups.yahoo.com/group/cambridgefreecycle/

Prufrock · 23/01/2006 09:58

Oooh progress - Jackieno's mirror site looks great, and screwfix will definately be gettinga visit later- once I've counted all eth doors. Does it really make a difference MrB - I am so hoping it will?

Ocean, Dwell and Cotswold are favourites of mine already - in fact my gorgeous sofa in the hallwaywas from ocean, and I'm sitting on a dwell chair right now!

the graham and gren mirror is beautiful, but a bit too pretty I think. We almost bought one of their mirrored chests, but ended up getting one made to order for about a quarter of the cost.

The cream clock would be perfect, if it was in black. Why does nobody make black leather clocks!

And I can completely bear Ikea - in fact I'd already got my eye on that rack, but it protrudes just a bit too much into the room I think - I want to put one at adult height and one at kid height.

Thank you all so much for shopping on my behalf

Not sure why there don't seem to be any black leather clocks around - will keep looking . I was sure I'd seen one in the White Company catalogue, but couldn't find anything on the website.

JackieNo · 23/01/2006 10:12

Not at all what you're looking for, but I find this strangely pleasing. It's the unexpected combination of the shape with the digital-ness, IYKWIM.

lapsedrunner · 23/01/2006 10:15

Ikea

MrsBadger · 23/01/2006 10:35

re. racks protruding into room - perhaps hat/coat rack at adult level and coat rack only at child height?
Hang a bag / basket on one of the pegs for hats/gloves.
