my ds1 is nearly 6 and is not really interested in maths so wondered if there are any toys that may help........

DS used to have an electric thing that helped with times tables that you twist

he also has a puzzle game

roisin · 22/01/2006 14:22

Brightminds are good for this sort of stuff.

roisin · 22/01/2006 14:23

RTK - are those times tables twist things any good?

Ds1 (8) doesn't "know" his tables, or at least not in the way I think he ought to. Whenever they test them at school they get about 20 seconds to write down the answer, and ds1 can easily 'work them out' in that time; so doesn't see the point of learning them off by heart.

thanks rtkangamummy and roisin - off to investigate further
He's not interested probably because dh and I aren't particularly intersted in maths either (art backgrounds). I am hoping someone in the last 30 years has invented something to make it all easier.

BEAM do a nice range of games etc, some things are pricey but others are more reasonable. I can recommend their top trumps though that might be a bit hard for a 6 year old.

TBH ELC do a lot of things which are to do with maths too- clocks, tape measures etc.

Also think about tangrams, pentominoe games etc.

pootlepod · 22/01/2006 14:57

Also, you can make you own snap/pelmanism games- I used to do this for tables but it would work with most things. Cut some card up into playing card sizes. Write the question on one, i.e. 2x 10 and the answer on another card 20. Do all the questions you want. Either play snap, or spread the cards face down and play 'pairs'.

I don't really know He enjoyed using it but I don't know if it helped

what about a CD rom -- we have a cd rom of PINGU games and puzzles

Have a look at the wonderful The Happy Puzzler - see the maths games section. From the tone of the website I should think they'd be pleased to discuss with you what might be best. (roisin, this where I got ds's Skyrail from, and seems to stock many of the things you've mentioned from time to time)

Also, publisher called Tarquin have a lot of things we like.

RTKangaMummy · 22/01/2006 15:43

this is a deffo brill website and is FREE!!!!!!!

roisin · 22/01/2006 19:25

Oh thanks RTK - that's great.
(I've just been testing my own tables for about 20 mins to see which games will suit ds1 the best!)

BROWNY · 22/01/2006 19:35

Thanks from me too!! My 6 year old is having quite a hard time at school, he's finding it really hard to concentrate, so I'll look at those sites more closely tomorrow!!

Zoombinis is a great game for logic & problem solving which all help with maths - they use it at our primary school & DD got soo hooked we had to buy it. DS loved it too, and now has been passed on to other littlies.

you're welcome
