Free or very cheap kindle books

I have an IPad and have downloaded the kindle app. I am very apprehensive about using it to read books as I am a book lover and I am worried it won't be the same.

So....

Do you have any good recommendations to get me started that are either free or very cheap. I don't want to spend a lot of money if I find I don't get on with it.

There are loads of free and cheap Kindle books on the Amazon website - most of the classics are free and lots of new authors too. I downloaded Anne of Green Gables last month for 99p because I fancied a blast from the past.

So far I have read:
Glasshopper - Isabel Ashdown - 89p
The Golden Acorn - Catherine Cooper - Free (older kids book)
Trick - Sean Hancock - free

I have enjoyed them all but it really depends upon your taste in books.

Can you suggest books you have enjoyed so people have an idea what to recommend?

Fwiw I was sceptical but I am a total convert and love my little kindle.

Go onto eReaderIq, sign up and you will be sent recommendations for new , free books every day. Nannynick told me about this site. the books are sorted into different genres.

Utterly have you looked at the best sellers in kindle books? The daily deal can sometimes be alright too.

When I first got the Kindle App I downloaded Invisible, it was awful. Wanted to write and ask for my money back but then realised it was free, did toy with the idea of writing to her and suggesting that she got a decent editor instead.

There are loads of free and cheap books on amazon, what kind of books are you into?

flapperghasted · 01/02/2012 08:53

I always check the reviews on the free books if they have them. If they don't have a review, I'll give them a miss. I'm at the stage where I'm not looking at the freebies any more cos I've got too many books on my Kindle already. I think it'll take me about a year to read the ones I've got downloaded already Blush

You can have a look at the Books Bazaar forum on kindleboards.com. Much of it is auhors promoting their own work so it can be a bit hit and miss. Like flapperghasted said, check the reviews or download a sample before buying.

My other half has just had his first book published as an ebook. Its the product of 3 years hard work in between him caring for our little boy after he became unemployed (OH not the little).

He describes it as amodern fariy tale but ots not twee, its a gritty northenr noir tale about what happens to a family when they suddenly gain unlimited money seemingly out of thin air. This attracts the interest of the the authorities and criminals and... Well I don't want to spolit the read for anyone.

It already been selling on Kindle and had good reviews both on Amazon UK and U S, and the reviews are not from our family or friends.

Its called Pocket Money by Harry Ellis and is available for the princley sum of 99p on Amazon.

brychensmum normally I would avoid spam like the plague but have been looking for something different to read for a few days, had a look at the book and have bought it.

Hope your husband does ok with it. Has he got any book bloggers to review his book?

On the kindle 100 best sellers page ( on kindle itself) at top of the page is 100 free best sellers - Iv downloaded quite a few and most are well worth a read!! The list changes every day too Smile

2madboys · 03/04/2012 11:31

If you look on the Kindle discussions forum on Amazon there is a thread each day showing the freebies. Lots of rubbish, but some interesting stuff too. And check the daily deal every day!

SoldeInvierno · 05/04/2012 15:24

I have also stopped looking exclusively for freebies as some of them are just so Bad. However, some of the cheap one can be really enjoyable. Someone here, or maybe another forum (can't remember) reccomended this and I loved it.

I also loved this: www.amazon.co.uk/The-Poison-Tree-ebook/dp/B003TSD9TO/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1333635826&sr=1-1, although it was a bit more expensive.

LemonMousse · 19/05/2012 14:30

brychensmum I've recently read your OH's book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was great so make sure you tell him Smile

Looking forward to his next one.

This...

www.amazon.co.uk/Seesaw-ebook/dp/B007GC5J9M/?tag=rosent-21

... is free at the moment (maybe today only?) and is fantastic - a mix of comic chick-lit and more serious stuff. I bought it last week and it was totally worth it just for the story about the dead dog, which is hilarious. (Believe it or not!)
