Which e-Reader? Very disappointed with Amazon Kindle

It was great while it lasted, but it didn't last long - 16m. They want £50 for a replacement and I'm inclined to think I will look at other e-readers before I fork out again for something that doesn't seem very robust - there are loads of people on here whose screen has frozen / gone all liney like mine has.

So what should I be looking at?

I love my kindle but I also have a kindle app on my acer tablet which is excellent.Otherwise Kobo or Sony e-reader seem to be popular but for me kindle has been trouble free [dh has one too].

Ah, I've had a couple of kindles die on me, I just ring up and explain, and they swap it over. Doesn't cost a thing.

What happened to yours?

CaroleService · 27/01/2012 12:43

The screen froze - a mixture of lines / the picture it gets when it sleeps / and text.

It was in a briefcase, and has always worn a proper Amazon Kindle cover, so not abused in any way.

There is sooo much on the internet about this screen problem, I feel that it is an inherent problem, not my bad luck. My mother's kindle died at almost exactly the same stage, for the same reason.

So I have my ranty pants on and unless I get a better offer, I'm moving to e-books. There is a new half size tablet from Samsung that would allow my dh to read e-books but also surf the internet, etc.

I've had one since they were released in the UK, and mine is still going strong despite being toted round the world in my handbag, though in a hard cover. I'm very happy with it, and the battery life and ease of reading is fabulous

NotQuiteCockney · 27/01/2012 13:02

Ah, I had part of the screen go wrong, just freeze up with lines on it (that happened twice). They just replaced it. (And like you, I use a cover, always, don't bash it etc.)

CaroleService · 27/01/2012 13:32

Was yours still in warranty, NotQuite?

Am very surprised that they want £50 to replace it. I would call back and talk to someone else.

My Kindle's been fine, so far. But I've heard very good things about Kobo and they look great and you can get library books on them without having to convert formats.

By the way, when my kindle screen froze, I was researching to see if I could recover it myself and it seemed that a particular type of kindle cover was the cause of the screen freezing. Might be worth checking out?

Shoshe · 25/02/2012 17:48

When mine freezes, I just hold the switch till it flashes, and it comes back on.
Has done it a few times, its kept in a hard cover and been everywhere with me, had it 15 months.

chipmonkey · 25/02/2012 22:17

That didn't work for mine, Shoshe. No matter what I did I had half of Jane Austen's head frozen on the screen and the rest of it changed from one text image to another.

elkiedee · 02/03/2012 09:10

When you say 16m is that 16 months or 16 minutes? We had that problem twice with dp's Kindles but once when it was very new and one a few months on. The first time he'd kept cards inside the Kindle cover and the second time he'd put his ipod down on top of the thing.

Justdoitok · 28/03/2012 16:11

I have had 3 with issues with one kindle. Luckly they replaced all without any fuss. The 3rd time was actually after a year. They say the waranty is only for one year but I don't think they can do this legally. I was already to challenge and demand fit for purpose but they just replaced.
