Maxi Rodi XP versus Britax Hi Liner...

Can anyone sway me in the right direction..I know both are good but my feeling is that the head supports of the Maxi Cosi are large..is this the case..of course, I know it's for the safety factor but they do appear to be much bigger than the Hiliner and my thought is that my 5yr old will hate it especially when I am upgrading from the Britax Ranger which does not have these at all... (He does like to daydream out the window.) you know I have just had Baby no 3 and my head is all mush..thanking you in advance....

We bought a Britax hiliner last weekend after seeing the report on the Ranger. DD loves it as she feels all safe and cosy in it and loves the head support bits - I thought she might not as she loves to watch out the window as well.

I feel much better about her being in it than the Ranger - plus they are half price everywhere at the moment!!

What a co-incidence I just went and bought the Britax Hi-liner yesterday.

I got it Halfords for 39.99, on the basis that it performed as well as the Maxi Cosi and the Concorde in the tests, but was 40 quid cheaper.

Can't say about the head things, but why don't you take your DS along with you when you buy it so that he can try both out? Just look up a shop that stocks both and give them a call to check they've got both in stock.

Thanks zephyrcat...can she still see out the window a bit??....glad to hear she feels all safe..that's the main thing so I must get on and buy something..anyone got any thoughts on the maxi cosi rodi???

Caligula...problem is I live out in the sticks and need to do most of these things online. The joys of living in rural Scotland...!!

I think she can still see out...she hasn't moaned that she can't yet!! We got it from Halfords as well and it was reduced to 39.99 from 80.00 - then we saw it in Tesco for the same price which is a real bargain! (It's got a little pull out drink and snack holder no each side as well which impressed her!! )

My 5 year old loves his highliner too!

I got it for £39.99 in motehrcare in the summer.

He certainly looks very comfy and safe and when he falls asleep he leans his head on the head bit so is still safely strapped in rtaher than head flopped forwards! (which looks SO uncomfy!)

Hiya, I have both of these car seats & dd has no problems seeing out of the window in either of them. I could only see it being a problem if she permanently had her neck at a 90 degree right angle to the left (or right!) , but as they tend to look forwards as well as to the sides, it's never been an issue. Also, neither of these car seats has a seatbelt "lock", so the child is free to move their head/neck/upper body forwards - a bit disconcerting when you're used to them being firmly strapped down! Had to tell dd to "sit back" in her car seat a couple of times, but not really been a problem.

I picked up my maxi cosi from eBay (brand new) for £55 inc. p&p, but then I got it over the New Year/Xmas period when fewer people were bidding. I prefer it to the Britax as it is comfier, you can adjust the width of the car seat (it has 2 settings - great for when they're a bit older or wearing bulky coats), and the seatbelt routing thing works much better than the britax one. It comes with a base that makes it an even better fit too. Overall, it does seems better quality & the headrest is less flimsy.

On the downside, the base means it's not quite so easy to move the seat from car to car etc, whereas our britax one can be moved in a couple of seconds! The main downside with the Britax one is that the seatbelt always seems to get tangled up after use (when the seatbelt retracts IFYSWIM), whereas this never happens with the maxi cosi one. But the britax one is excellent value and scores just as well overall on safety/usability tests..... and, of course, it always seems to be on special offer somewhere

HTH, Iona

Been looking at these two as well and the hi-liner is tempting as its so cheap. Just been looking on the Halfrods website though and you cant convert the Hi-liner to a booster the way you can with a Rodi (although Boosters are cheap anyway when that time comes). Also, the Rodi seems to hug the bottom better which would stop smaller children sliding around so much. Think I'll go for the Rodi but watching this thread with interest.

Prettybird · 20/01/2006 09:28

I got the Maxi Rodi for £59.99 at John Lewis. Very pleased with it.

LilacBump · 20/01/2006 09:31

we bought a britax hi liner two weeks ago. it was on sale, £45 in mothercare. DD is 4.5 and she loves it. and i feel she's much safer than with her previous carseat (one of the worst on the which report).

sparklymieow · 20/01/2006 09:31

am looking at both of these too, I am getting a new car in march as am going to wait till then, but does anyone know if either fit a vauxhall Zafira??

winniewoo · 20/01/2006 12:41

The britax website will tell you which car's their seats will fit into..not sure about the maxi cosi..might be worth looking at their site too...

The Maxi Cosi is the Which best car seat for the age band. I have the Britax Kid, which ran it a close second.

MaryBS · 21/01/2006 08:22

...just checking on Which:

Rodi XP:
"The best overall performer from 2004, this seat still makes the grade as a Best Buy. It's easy to use, comfortable and gives good overall protection in a crash". Score of 72.

Hi-liner:
"A good performer, easy to use. This Best Buy seat does well for one that caters for two weight groups and matches the Maxi-Cosi and Concords for safety.". Score of 71

Britax Kid:
"Probably the best seat we looked at in 2003, the Kid offers good safety and ease of use. It's still up with the leaders in this weight group, maintaining its Best Buy status." Score of 68

Forgot to say we gave our daughter the choice between the XP and the Kid, and she found the Kid more comfortable. They're all much of a muchness - perhaps let your child decide? Try them out in the car as well? I got mine from Kiddicare of Peterborough, and they offer a fitting service so you can see which one fits the best, plus hints and tips on putting it in your car

MaryBS · 21/01/2006 08:24

Just seen sparkly's post - yes the XP will fit in a Zafira, I have a Zafira (and as mentioned, I have the Britax Kid)

Belo · 21/01/2006 09:43

We've got the Maxi-Cosi. I was influenced by the Which report. I'm happy with it. The cover is very easy to wash as well!
