Thinking of trading down my Passat estate because it's getting on a bit, drinks petrol and costs a small fortune in tax and insurance. Don't want to lose the size and space though. What could I get? Is a Focus very big?

S-MAX with a TDCi diesel engine? Mine does 50mpg.

DH drives a diesel Passat estate and it's very good on fuel, 50 odd mpg, tis a comany car so not sure what the tax is like, but it was one of the lowest of the similar sized/spec cars he was offered.

Focus estates are quite spacious, and absolutely bloody lovely to drive, a 1.6 TDCi will probably work out very economical indeed.

Ok thanks, was thinking it might probably end up being a Ford, we've got a big Ford place just down the road. Might have to give them a call then.

They are great cars to drive, and fairly cheap to maintain, I drive a Galaxy and love it, but it really is a gas guzzler! My dad gets them as mobility cars so I've had experience of driving pretty much the whole range, and they've all been great, although the focus estate was just superlatively good.
