Replace engine on 7 yr old car, or bite the bullet and replace car?

We have a 7 yr old Espace which we have managed to pretty much blow up. Driving back from a cycling trip there was lots of smoke coming out the back. Ever the optimist I thought we could make it home, well to cut a long story short it now has a seized engine and after spending nearly a grand on a new manifold the car needs a new engine.

So, do we spend nearly two grand on a second hand engine that the garage can source and put in for us, or just call it a day and see if we can scrape the money up for a new car?

It's not a great time for us to buy and new car, but I don't want to throw good money after bad if you know what I mean..

Disclaimer-not in any way mechanically minded but..

My 7 year old Almera dramatically pegged out last year.
Turned out to be the gearbox (automatic) which the garage quoted £5000 to replace.
The car was only worth £2,500-£3,000 so not an option.
I'd had an accelerator cable replaced last year.
The rear sensor parking had stopped and the ariel broke (minor but annoying).

I got a trade-in on a 1 year old Note.

in the same boat...2004 Hyundai traject -- found out this morning needs 3k worth of work...what did you get trade in LotF?

£1,500.

The Note is my 3rd car from them. (My from new Micra got W/O in an accident, then I got the Almera)

Had all my service and MOT there so fair do.
I couldn't have got that price privately.
