Or are they a COMPLETE waste of money?

Got ours new - as felt better that there would be no probs with the car. Paid more for the peace of mind.

spacecadet · 15/01/2006 14:42

i wouldnt personally buy a brand new one as they depreciate so much in value in the first few months, would buy one that was about 6 months old onwards.

Littlefish · 15/01/2006 14:43

Although there are some good deals out there, various members of my family who are in the car business all suggested buying a car a year old with low mileage. This is because you lose such a lot of money with depreciation in the first year.

vickiyumyum · 15/01/2006 14:44

we brought one too! and just about to change it for another brand new car but bigger. i like the fact that i got to choose exactly what i wanted and that it was all new and shiny, no mot for 3 years, warantees and guarantees in tact etc. would find it really difficult to go back to second hand car now. (our budget not flash just along the ford/vauxhall lines)

mumatuks · 15/01/2006 14:45

Well I always think of it like this:

DH got a Ford Focus Estate. Should've been £16,000.

however

Because it was 6 months old, with 3000 miles on the clock, he got it for £10,000. You couldn't tell it had been used either! (unlike now, full of spilt kiddies drinks / wrappers etc!!)

So to answer you're question, we wouldn't!

Hulababy · 15/01/2006 14:46

We always get new, bar a couple of cars. Much prefer to. Yes, you lose money to start with I know. But neither ee or Dh have any car maintenance knowledge, so can't risk having a car that might need repairs. Our experience of used cars is not that good!

Besides I like the excitement of going and choosing it new, choosing the extras, the right colours....then waiting for it t arrive, and picking it.

We have a Honda CR-V that we bought new in 2004 from a dealer who imports them from Europe. We were going to buy a year-old one (because of the depreciation). But then we looked at how much this particular car depreciates in the first couple of years (not much) and the price of the imported ones and realised the new one would work out cheaper. So its worth doing your homework!

We also had a new car before that - a Golf bought in Holland in 2000. But that was when you saved a lot of money by buying in Europe, so again it was actually cheaper to import a new one than buy a 2-yr-old one.

tribpot · 15/01/2006 14:51

I bought new last time because it was the only way to persuade dh to give up his two-seater sportscar for a Skoda (Btw I think my MIL still blames me for the fact he had to sell it - where was the baby going to go, in the boot?!)

Buying almost-new, or getting the demo model, makes a lot more sense economically.

jac34 · 15/01/2006 15:02

We went for brand new this time as we wanted three years without having to worry about MOT's or if there were going to be any expensive repair bills.
We have a small economical car anyway so it wasn't much more expensive than a second hand one.
All our children are out of car seats(DS's on booster seats)and there are three diagonal belts in the back for them.DH and I share the car to keep our motering costs down,we also live in a city with good public transport,so the car will proberbly last us years.

The motoring expert on a specialist consumer magazine told me buying brand new was like hiring a car for three years - because of the depreciation. The money you lose is the equivalent of the hire charge. His magazine advises buying nearly-new ie a few months old or dealer-registered.

Thankyou all-I am picking up my BRAND NEW VW GOLF
tomorrow.

I think i am getting a good deal-they are taking my old golf(M Reg) off my hands in part exchange for £750(the boot lid is taped up with masking tape)
This golf was fab and had it 8 years.

They have also allowed me to use my Visa card-so i will get £130 cashback!

We actually go about the whole car buying differently anyway. We buy new at least every 3 years. Generally more often, especially for the main car. So we never actually buy a car. We have it for a certain length of time, paying using a private loan. We then trade it in. Our payments, now we are well in the system, don't increase. We just end up with a car of the same of better quality/cost.

notasheep · 15/01/2006 21:30

A girlfriend of mine does that too and seems to work out ok

PrincessPeaHead · 15/01/2006 21:39

I always buy new. I always by a good, slowly depreciating brand at a discounted rate so the depreciation doesn't really kick in until after the first year or so.

That means never buy a Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, Citroen, Fiat (depreciate like a stone), do buy vw, bmw, audi, well regarded cars by mazda, toyota, honda. Don't buy from main dealers, buy from good internet brokers like drivethedeal.com. And don't part exchange, sell privately.

Sell them at 3 years and start again. Zero maintenance apart from basic servicing and in the long run much cheaper (and more enjoyable!)

allyco · 16/01/2006 10:17

I am SO excited I ordered my car on Saturday AND not one dealer in the country had the one I wanted AND it has to come all the way from Japan AND it has satnav AND AND AND I am so excited and I even got £2,000.00 part-ex for my crappy old car.

Only downside is it may be three or four months before it arrives so I am having to haul DD in and out of backseat of current said crappy two-door car and new baby will probaby arrive before the new car but I DON'T CARE. I have never had anything new before!!!!!!!!!!

iota · 16/01/2006 10:24

apart from my very first car, I have always bought new (it helps if a family member works for a car manufacturer)

notasheep · 16/01/2006 13:17
