Asda nightmare

In Asda yesterday spent £80 odd on groceries. Didn't know pin no. which I told cashier ( I usually sign it). She said pin was blocked and I coulndn't use card. Didn't und erstand as it has been doing this for about a month and I can still use it. Asked for another form of payment which I didn't have. Manager refused to override it and said I could stand there all day if I wanted to. Ended up in tears with my 2 dds sitting in trolley. Then said they would phone bank and returned to say they are retaining my card. Phoned bank when I got home, who say they had no right to keep my card.

Can't beleive they treated you like this? Why exactly? I used to be a hotel receptionist and we were only ever advised to retain cards if suspected fraud/theft were involved.

Call head office and complain girl, lay it on thick. You were reduced to tears in public in front of your kids.

Grrr

heavenis · 11/01/2006 10:38

I would write and complain to Asdas' head office. See if the bank will give you something in writing to say that they shouldn't have retained your card. Has the bank contacted the store.

lucykate · 11/01/2006 10:42

same thing happened to my dh when the chip and pin thing came in. he didn't know the number and they retained the card. its true, they do not have the right to take the card from you, our bank said the same to dh.

can't believe they did handled it in such a way to upset you so much, thats awful. you need to complain. is there another supermarket you can go to instead in future? i would stop going there in protest.

carly82 · 11/01/2006 10:43

i used to work in asda and they have an incentive that if a card is declined and they retain it that colleague gets fifty pound supposed to crack down on fraud and theft but not for the poor people that are innocent

heavenis · 11/01/2006 10:45

Thats horrible they profit from you not knowing your pin

lucykate · 11/01/2006 10:46

ahhh, that explains it carly!, surely that shouldn't count if the person has other id to prove the card is theirs

carly82 · 11/01/2006 10:49

it shouldnt but tbh i think fifty pound is too much of an incentive for some
i thought by law you still had until feb this year to sign if you don't know your pin?

macaroni · 11/01/2006 10:50

Customer services manager cut up card in front of me as I was worried about them keeping it. Lifted my 2 dds out of trolley and left with no groceies. Ngh. rountil new card comes thow I don't have a method of payment to use anywhere. Had fish suppers for dinner last night and have 4 nappies left.

I used to work in a shop and yes, you do get £50.00 for retaining a card, but thats only done so on the say so of the bank, other wise you get no money, so you cant "retain" a card and claim money if the bank hasn't said so.
Did you attempt to enter your pin at all? If you did, and it was wrong, then the bank would say to retain the card (After more than one attempt) in the same way a cash machine would "swallow" a card if the pin is entered incorrectly twice /three times depending on the issuer.
But I would complain anyway!

carly82 · 11/01/2006 10:52

macaroni you can go into a branch of your bank and explain what happened and provided you have the correct I.D ie drivers license, passport etc you can withdraw money there and then i had to do this when my bag was stolen, they asked my security questions like mohers maiden name, date of birth then i showed them my I.D hth

macaroni · 11/01/2006 10:52

Before I left I made sure I had a note of all their names, but didn't get the cashiers name. What should I do now?

OP posts:
Elf1981 · 11/01/2006 10:53

Just write / phone and complain. You dont need to know the cashiers name. Do you have the managers name? Or if you look at the big sign outside your ASDA it should have the store managers name. Complain to them

carly82 · 11/01/2006 10:54

The customer services manager should know this if not even if you can remember the til you went too that would be fine as the cashiers are put on a till and they note who is on what checkout

mumatuks · 11/01/2006 10:55

This is disgusting!! How awful to do that to a mum infront of all those customers.
Personally I'd take this further than just a complaint. Can you go to the citizens advice beureux (sp?) or ring them and see what they have to say?
If you're near me I'll bring you some nappies and some dinner over!!

macaroni · 11/01/2006 10:55

I never attempted to put in my pin. I just told her I didn't know it. Then she said my pin was locked. This has been happening all through December, but I just sign for it and it's okay.

I didn't even get to speak to the actual store manager as they said he was at another store. I asked where and csm said 'we can't give out that information'

im horrified, what a dreadful thing to do, by rights you have until feb before chip and pin becomes compulsory, they are only allowed to retain your card if the bank request it, i cant beleive the bank would request your card because you didnt know your pin, however, there is a possibility that they have done if you entered your pin incorrectly a few times. Sounds like you have been victim of an overzealous cashier and manager. You can go into your bank and withdraw cash, also get onto the customer services dept of asda, write to their head office etc, I would kick up a stink about this.

macaroni · 11/01/2006 11:10

Thanks heavinis. One of the staff I spoke to said write to Asda House and I said I think I have better things to do than write letters. However, it looks as though I'll have to write. I could have done it by now! But it's good to hear other people's views.
