I've been invited to the Christening of the daughter of a good school friend of mine. Any (unusual) suggestions as to what to buy as a gift?

Blooming Marvellous (I think its www.bloomingmarvellous.co.uk) have a gift section, quite a wide choice, maybe you can find something there?

allatsea · 08/11/2003 14:26

I'm clubbing in with a friend, so we figured about £60 total.

Still trawling through the pile of catalogues for Xmas inspiration and found lovely gifts for babies and/or their parents at www.penhaligons.co.uk
They do gorgeous silver egg to put first curl or first tooth and some nice china things.

What about books? DD got a lovely set of Narnia books for her christening. I am sure she will love them when she is older. We are also starting to collect some of the Roald Dhal ones for her too.

DD also got a lovel set of toddler cutlery which she has just started using.

She also get about 6 money boxes, Royal Daulton Plate, Musical boxes, silver braclet, clothes....

DD got given a fab toy workshop noah's ark amongst the usual stuff. She's really played with it and it looks good too. Her godmother also gave her a beautifully illuminated copy of the Hail Mary (hand done by nuns, looks like something from the book of Kells). There was an article in the telegraph on Saturday about the convent that does them on the isle of wight. Godmother was working that way at the time so assume that's where she got it.

My daughter was given a lovely tapestry with a teddy bear, date of birth and her name on it plus a little wooden stool from a craft fair with her date of birth around the edge. A friend had also painted a plate (the kind you paint and take back to be glazed) with a teddy bear, dob etc etc and that was lovely.

I am Godmother to my niece and we bought her a statue to go in the garden, it was really tasteful and is something she can have in her own garden one day - my brother said it was the best present she was given! For dd2's christening a friend bought her a lovely wooden "memories" box, decorated with her name, which we thought was lovely.

Books are great - how about the complete collection of the Beatrix Potter Tales or the Winnie the Pooh books. Something they can use and keep.

CnR · 21/11/2003 09:07

WE also have a box set of the Beatrix Potter tales - DD is realy starting to enjoy these now as bedtime stories. She also has the set of Little Miss books.

I love books - so does DD.

Just some of the gifts my daughter received and I probably wouldn't have thought of them. There are lovely things out there for christening, you just have to look for them.
necklaces with crosses, lockets - silver or mother of pearl, bank accounts - you will need a full birth certificate for this, carousel, rung which can be used as a charm or pendant later in life, wedgwood or royal doulton, photo allbums, bear factory teddy bears, educational toys, just to name a few....

Angeliz · 04/12/2003 20:25

there are a set of 5 boxes you can get that you put the babys handprints in each year! I saw it on the net somewhere and WISH i had discovered it 2 years ago for dd. If you are intersested i'll try to find the address......
My mam got dd a little bible in a box!

Try The Book People for lovely box sets of Peter Rabbit & Thomas the Tank Engine books.

bossykate · 05/12/2003 19:54

how about one of these? . you can get either lambswool or cashmere, depending on how rich/generous you are feeling. i think they would last well if treated properly.

I bought 3 little girls who were christened this summer a fruit tree each, but my daughters most used christening present is an (adult) poetry book which I read to her and have done for over 5 years. She has developed a very good vocabulary and really enjoys the rythum (sp?) of peoms like the night mail & sea fever
