Paints -- Woolworths does painting sets from £2.99; my (now) 25 month old would love any of them. And washable Crayola marker pens for the same price. If you want educational... DH just got DS a letter-stencil set for his 4th birthday, but it's DD (barely 2yo) who shows more interest. This with some felt marker pens would make sense to me.

Not educational, but DD's fave birthday present was a little backpack. She wears it all the time.

my dd is 2.6 and loves the kids glue and then any bags of stars.feathers....hearts....anything creative like that.don't know what she's getting for Christmas yet! All i've got her so far is a little Nemo fish and a fluffy pink cushion!

How about some simple games - dominoes, matching, fishing - or puzzles. Otherwise something longer lasting like a wooden marble/car run, basic dolls' house or farm (wooden or Lego ?)to which you could add later, painting easel and accessories, cassette player and tapes....

Very similar ideas here too- when my ds was that age I got him a painting easel that had a magnetic board on one side. With it we got him paints, an overall, magnetic letters, numbers and shapes (people, animals, houses) and a load of paper. Thinking of zebra's idea, you could combine things that way too- get your dd a little backpack and fill it with paints, stickers and so on for her to find inside. When my dd came along we abandoned all pretence at education and went for the doll's pram and stuff like that I'm afraid!

Definitely craft things - my ds who was 28 month old son loves painting and drawing, and also the ELC soft stuff sets. He also really likes glueing and making things. Or jigsaws - he is very into these as well at the moment - I got a teletubbies one with a 12 piece and a 24 piece picture which was ideal - he's just managed the harder one.

Sorry about the first sentence there.....I'm illiterate today. Should have read 'my 28 month old son'

I agree totally on the pram bit. Girls are so much easier than boys. In a couple of moths she will be really into her "babies". She'll need a highchair, a bath, changing and feeding kit - however far you want to go. They also love bags, backpacks, can't have too many. Jigsaws too are good. Angelina ballerina etc. Girls are wonderful to buy for. If she's 26 mths now, she's not going to have a birthday for a while and there'll be a heap of stuff she starts to enjoy before then. Re the educational side, I have mixed feelings about that. I don't know if she goes to nursery at all, but although I've got all the paint and glitter and everything (I have ages 5, 3, and 1.5) I tend to leave all that to other people to do with them! And I don't do anything like computers or pre-school learning with them. My ds (5) could ride a bike without stabilisers @ 4.5, which a lot of his friends still can't do at 5.5, and he is starting from scratch with computers and reading and all the other school stuff and they are NO further advanced than he is despite having parents who were conscientious about "starting them early".
ELC has a wonderful fairy castle for £25 ish, a sort of indoor tent. They LOVE it. Also dressing up stuff is good.
Good luck

my little girl will be 27 months at Christmas time and this is what we have - little stocking things like tights, socks, panties, chocs, new drinking cups, straws, stickers, books, hair clips, balloons, paintbrushes/sponges, fingerpaints, playdough. And maybe bigger gifts like dressing up clothes, a junior doctor's kit, dollhouse with accessories, doll clothes, stickle bricks, fuzzy felt.
I'm sure you'll get lots of other ideas too. Good luck! We have bought her a kitchen as her main present, I'm really excited about it, more than she might be....!

Thankyou all so much for your wonderful ideas. I especially think the craft "stuff" will go down a treat. She already has a pram and doll, the high chair etc is a brilliant idea - she loves pushing "Molly" around. As she is the only grandchild on both sides you could say that she gets more than enough, hence, thats why I want to get her something that won't be lashed in the corner and forgotten about in a couple of weeks. This is the first time I've posted a question and I think it's great, thanx again....

had another thought - she is too young for a dolls house still but won't be far off enjoying one... It's a good thing to have early so it's there when she's ready, and it also gives you time to accumulate the furniture, which isn't cheap. Just tell people she needs a sitting room or whatever, and they choose which one to get.
