Cheap Kitchen

We're planning on moving out of our flat before the summer but the kitchen thats in has been here since to place was buit in the early eighties I think. Ever since I moved in I've been meaning to get it replaced and now that we're moving out I can't see it selling with the hideous kitchen. Unfortunatly everything will need replaced as the unit housings are falling apart and bits had to get taken out when the central heating was put in.
What I really need is the cheapest kitchen avaliable but I'll need it fitted as well and this seems to be where all the money goes. What I'd like to know has anyone got a really good deal anywhere or know of a good cheap joiner in the Dundee area and I could just get a cheap Ikea or B&Q one.

Could you just change the doors etc?

1980cat · 09/01/2006 12:38

I thought about that but the housings are falling to bits, one door actually fell off last week prompting the need for a new one. Also the work top is really marked so that needs replaced to.

b and q have some real bargains as do mfi you can get their free planner to draw it out for you

B&Q kitchens are great, we've had three of them now (different houses). Never tried their fitting so can't comment on that.

friend got an ikea kitchen and a local fitter all done including worktops for £1000

Kittypickle · 09/01/2006 12:53

I've just had a local carpenter quote for fitting a new kitchen. He said it would be 3-4 days at £130 a day if that helps at all.

Tinker · 09/01/2006 12:55

We've just fitted a B&Q kitchen in order to sell the house - fine, I think. If fitting for me, like the look of IKEA's. A fitter is approx £100 ish per day. "We" did it ourselves though - it's doable.

We had a quote a couple of years back from B&Q at £4500, The cost of the kitchen and appliances was only £2500 so they were changing £2000 for the two days it would take to fit it.
How easy are they to install yourself I just have visions of them falling down. My dad has offered to do it don't know if I trust him though

ikea's are cheap, and neutral/groovy enough to be attractive for wide range of buyers. i have put one together, with my own bare hands, in two days , its not hard

Piffle · 09/01/2006 13:48

B+Q very expenisve installation but they do organise all the gas/electrics water and tiling etc...
We had one and no complaints
this time round we are fairly sure we are doing ikea kitchen and local man install, or local Turnbulls kitchen and then install at £145 per day
Homebase have a lot of good money off deals just now and you have the benefit of them planning it for you for nowt

IKEA have started doing the fitting too, but I don't know if all stores are doing it yet. I think their charges are pretty comparable, plus they would 'know' the ktchen iyswim. Check with your local store.

We had a Wickes kitchen and then they recommended a fitter to us. Cost about £2000 all together and would def recommend.

If you are not moving appliances about its not that hard to fit. If you can manage flat pack then you can put kitchen units together.

If you can plan it, build the units, put on the legs and put in position. Then get a local carpenter to do any fiddle bits like cutting the plinths, fitting work tops and cutting out for sinks.

Re plumbing the sink etc shouldn't be to hard if you are putting it in the same place.

Look out for ex display units and if your worktops are short lengths check the cutting area in B&Q for off cuts, like wise check Ikea bargin area for work tops.
