My Dad hates Xmas but would appreciate it if we sponsored a patch of land for tree-planting in his name. Any ideas, ladies?

I know he'd be especially pleased if it were in the 3rd world - helping others etc. I'm sure there must be charities which specialise in this but all the Net searches I;ve done don't bring up what I want. Can anyone help?

There is a company which allows you to do things like buy a flock of chickens for someone in the 3rd world. It's been mentioned on Mumsnet before.

Found it!

Sorry got the address wrong the first time.

You can buy 100 trees to plant in Bangladesh for £35 or for £5, provide an Ethiopian family with 2 apple trees.

I sponsor a 3rd world child through World Vision, and recently received their alternative christmas catalogue - this catalogue lists 'products' ranging in price from £10 to several hundred which you can buy as alternative presents for friends and relatives. The products are things like agricultural equipment, a goat, etc -all stuff that helps third world families. I am sure it will include plants and trees too. Some of these gifts are quite affordable - I am sure if you look at the worldvision website you could request the catalogue / get details.

Worldvision are very reputable and following on from Angleliz' posts I am 100% confident that they money is spent as intended.

Just checked their website (www.worldvision.org.uk) and there is a direct link to their gift catalogue there. Two apples trees cost £5!

I had a look at Soupie's link, too. I couldn't work out if the gifts are confined to Christian communities/countries - they mention bibles and Christian schools. The only gift for SE Asia is pigs - not a lot of use in a Muslim country like Indonesia.

Angeliz · 06/11/2003 11:16

pleased to hear that and think i will choose something from there! Isn't it a great idea?

SoupDragon · 06/11/2003 11:22

Sudonim, they mention reforestation in Bangladesh and that's not a Christian country.

suedonim · 06/11/2003 12:27

No, I realise that, SoupD, but I wondered if it was a small Christian community within Bangladesh. I really wanted soemthing in Indonesia, tbh, but there doesn't seem to be anything.
