Kitchen Gadget Help?

I have a big mixer/food-processor thing. I hate it. I only use it when I need to grate large quantities of food.

(I have a wand blender for daily use. And its little chopper attachment works fine for most of my mad chopping requirements.)

Is there a better way to grate large quantities of stuff? And don't say a regular grater, I use them, but hate them, and will not be grating cups of raw potato on them any time soon.

authentic V slicer?

hana · 06/01/2006 13:57

what do you grate?
just curious!
I always cut my fingers on the handheld grater, ouch
would love a big food processor but they are so big and our kitchen so small...

Oh, yes, I have a mandolin (if that's what you mean by a V slicer? But I don't use it that often. (I am convinced I will lose a finger to it someday.) It does julienne, I could use julienne instead of grated ...

hana, I don't grate that often, but I grate carrots, to make carrot cake, and potato and other root veg to make latkes. I also cut my fingers on handheld graters, although I'm getting better at them.

I borrowed one during Christmas to make a few things and it just grew and grew on the counter, they do take up lots o f spalce

is there a medium sized food proc around? maybe that's the answer?

NotQuiteCockney · 06/01/2006 14:06

Actually, I could throw out all the bits of my food processor I've never used, and just keep the bits I need to grate. That would be weird, but effective.

We were given one of these as a present, and although it has lots of bits it does have a small footprint. And a cool pod-like thing to keep the discs in, away from fingers.

NQC, have you tried a rotary grater ? They're a fiddle to clean but at least they don't get at your fingers.
I'd just put the bits of the processor you don't use in a box in the loft - then when you come to sell it on ebay at least you'll have it all

Oh, i used to own a rotary grater, but I kept killing them. A new one would be a good idea.

I wouldn't mind a new food processor, I guess, but as I use our current one maybe once a month, I'm not that tempted ...

Oooo I would love one of those! They are rfab for making pastry in. I might ebven consider making pastry instead of buying it if I had one of those.
