where can i find an underarm sticky thermometer?

at the moment we only have one of those thermometers you hold on your forehead... but ds hates it and won't stay still.

we spoke to nhs direct (as he had a fever) and ended up speaking to a nurse and a doctor who both (independantly of each other) suggested that an underarm one was the way to go. apparently the ear ones are not that easy to get in the right place and often give false readings because of this.
now, i can't really see ds being still enough to use an underarm one either but was told you can get ones that stick onto the skin and you leave them there til you have your reading.... but i can't find them anywhere!

anyone know where i can get some?

Boots - ours was only £8 and it works under the tongue too.

Just reread and ours doesn't stick onto the skin so presume its not what you're looking for....

just get surgical tape and stick a normal one o

I like ear thermometers. Just take 3 readings. Not difficult and very quic

starlover · 05/01/2006 19:41

yeah well we were going to get one... but the people we spoke to (one nurse, one doctor) both said that they can give really inaccurate readings because they can be quite difficult to position correctly...

i did see a dummy one though.. they just suck on it and you get the temp

I use a traditional glass one, but you get a digital one that can go under the arm or tounge which is excellent. I always found forehead ones are difficult to read.

SL, they use the in the ear ones in hospitals and at GP surgeries - you'll never just take one reading if you're worried about a hot child so I'd get one of those (have one for DS).

I think GPs and hospitals use the pricier ear thermometers, and are also likely to be a bit braver about poking them far enough into the ear canal.
When dd2 was in hospital they had little disposable stick-on ones, but I've never seen these on sale anywhere.
We use a little electronic one at home from Boots. The fact that it beeps when it's ready makes you wait long enough, and reminds you to fish it out from under their arms if you've forgotten about it.. (as I frequently used to with the old glass ones - I was forever leaving them with patients!)
Tchibo are also doing a talking one here but it doesn't say what accent it speaks in. I think ds2 would like a dalek one..

yes but hunkermunker... the point they were making is that unless you have been trained, it can be VERY easy to not get them in the right place.

you could take 3 inaccurate readings in a row!

We were told this by 2 separate people (a doctor and a nurse) INDEPENDANTLY of each other. and they both suggested underarm ones!

i think you're right jmb... gp's etc know what they're doing, and know how far they can poke it, and where to position it correctly. I don't!
