My sister had eight children and the silvercross pram went everywhere.Apparently she had to phone up and have one made to order!

edam · 01/01/2006 22:14

I know they aren't cheap...

thecattleareALOHing · 01/01/2006 22:16

Try Ebay. They are becoming really fashionable I think. Seem a couple about recently.

NomDePlume · 01/01/2006 22:23

You can still get them but they are very, very expensive for a brand new Silvercross one. There are loads of original 1970's & 1980's coach-built prams on ebay.

tillykins · 01/01/2006 22:25

I've seen a couple recently actually - and our local school has a lollipop lady who has her baby with her in a Silver Cross pram (always makes me chuckle, it looks incongruous)
I think they are lovely, very sturdy and proper prams - plenty of room to get your shopping in!
And you can load a toddler on too

Get one! You know you want to

tillykins · 01/01/2006 22:29

I'd google it for you but DH might see I'd been looking and have a heart attack!

NomDePlume · 01/01/2006 22:39

JJJJJJJJJEEEEEEEESSSSSSUUUUUUUSSSSSSS

Just looked up the prices for the 2 styles of pram that SC do... The Balmoral comes in at an eyewatering £895 and it's litte brother, the Kensington comes in at £795

Skribble · 01/01/2006 23:01

I have a gorgeous white and navy one I am selling at the moment. Like this but the body is white.

Pixel · 02/01/2006 01:55

I saw one outside a charity shop in beautiful condition with the matching bag and everything. I just drooled over it until it was sold, it was almost worth having another baby for!

NomDePlume · 02/01/2006 10:49

You should've bought it, whacked it on ebay and made a juicy profit, Pixel !

NomDePlume · 02/01/2006 10:52

I think they are wonderful if you do a lot of walking, rubbish for anyone who uses the car or public transport (can you imagine wrestling one of these onto the tube ?! ROFL). I'd love one if a) I had another baby (not likely in the next 6 or 8 years) and b) if I used the car less.... My old neighbour had one that she used for daytime naps (for her baby obv), I don't think it ever actually went further than her back garden !

mollycodle · 02/01/2006 14:34

I saw one the other day. Not sure if it was a SC but it was a slightly more modern version. All white, wheels slightly chunkier (3 wheeler style) and lower down than a traditional SC.

It did have a silver badge on the bottom which was obviously the make of the pram but couldn't see what it was.

PrettyCandlesAndTinselToo · 02/01/2006 15:23

I've seen a few around here - but then I am in NW London . Frankly I think they look great! Really retro and elegant. If I walked everywhere I'd like to have one.

PeachyClair · 02/01/2006 15:29

I got a 20+ year old one for £15 from someone. It needed work (Dh sanded and resprayed frame, I re-dyed pram) but I guess the overall cost to us was £50. It was great for round the village where we lived then and the Carrycot was fab at night, but not practical for the car so we used a carrier away from home.

Wanted card in your local Supermarket might well pull you up one, they are the sort of thing people keep in the attic for ages not knowing what to do with.

SKYLERtnightholynight · 02/01/2006 15:39

I have an old style coach built Silver Cross and I have loved using it for my dd2 who is 6 months old. I have a toddler seat too and pop my 2.5 year old on there as well. I love using it as there is loads of room for all my shopping, I can talk to my baby and talk to my toddler LOADS which I would not do if she was facing away from me. However I am able to walk everywhere and it is not at all practical for shopping apart from in the supermarket as I have to leave it out side the smaller shops (taking the baby in and we live in a very safe place at the mo). I would not even try to take it on any public transport or bother in the car although I know it is possible it is too impractical. I have people stop me every week to talk about the pram and how lovely it is to see one as it is the only one out here (we are overseas). HTH.

SKYLERtnightholynight · 02/01/2006 15:42

I love that dd2 has so much room too as she is a long baby, and she can sleep in it during the day and get some fresh air outside (it is still warm where we are too). I will be using it for longer than I would have a normal style pram too.

NomDePlume · 02/01/2006 16:16

molly, tbh, I wouldn't worry about what your mates will think of your pram choice. If you like it and think you'd get enough use out of it to justify the cost, then get one . I'm the same age as you (although my dd is 3y4m) and I'd use one if I had a little baby and did sufficient walking to justify the cost. I'd just keep a smaller umbrella old buggy (like a Maclaren XT or similar) for use in the car or on public transport.

NomDePlume · 02/01/2006 16:16

umbrella fold

IlanaK · 02/01/2006 16:26

I agree that you can talk to baby in it. And if you have a child (like mine) who hated being in a pushchair, it is a totally different story in one of there. Firstly, although they are strapped in (you can attach reins to it), they still have much more freedom of movement. And they are soooo much higher up they can see better. And of course they can see you as they face you.

When I moved to flat in London and had to put mine in storage (and no way am I selling it as I plan to get rich one day and live in larger flat with larger lift!), I bought an Emmaljunga pram. It is modern, but has many of the same features as the old style coach prams. It is slightly smaller so I can fit it in my lift and it folds better too. LIke the SC, you can have baby facing you and it also has a toddler seat to go on top. I still miss my coach pram, but this is a good modern alternative. (pricey though at about £500)

Skribble · 02/01/2006 22:45

Once everything gets back to normal and the kids are back to school I will take some decent pics and put them in the supermarkets, I bought in for £5 in a charity shop, so I wonder how much profit i can make. It was imaculate when I bought.

I wish I had the big one for my first he was 11lb6oz and filled the smaller oval silvercross i had. I wouldn't have trusted a moses basket for either and used the prams for sleeping in the day. I used to take the big one on the train no problem and even on the low access buses if I had to.

mollycodle · 03/01/2006 10:41

Hi thanks scribble can u paste a pic on here so i can see it are these prams cotton inside at all or other stuff

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 03/01/2006 11:24

mollycodle - I think the hood and sides are cotton-lined but they have a proper mattress in the bottom so you can use whatever bedding you'd normally use in a crib / moses basket etc

RTKangaSantaMummy · 03/01/2006 12:03

WE have got a full size coach SC pram that we love. DNephews had it first and then DS and now use for childminding

very very comfortable to push, put a toddler seat on it too,

nephews were away from car fumes cos they lived in large town

it fits into our VOLVO estate boot to go to the park

deffo brill for walking across grass

even taking it to shopping mall loads of space for shopping in huge tray underneath

So if you get one buy a huge VOLVO and it will fit the wheels come off from the carriage

SKYLERtnightholynight · 03/01/2006 16:37

I have just folded my SC down for the first time as it has to be shipped back to the UK tomorrow. I will miss it loads . And it was MUCH MUCH easier to fold down and went smaller than I ever thought it would. Mine is plasticy type material on the inside but there is so much room my dd is never touching it anyway. She just rests on the (ridiculously expensive but lovely) mattress with whatever bedding. The idea of using my pram again is a contributing factor to considering a number three .
