Where can I get ready-made blinds/curtains for my massive windows?

It's a nightmare - they're 3.5 metres x 3 metres - so even Ikea curtains aren't long enough

Does anyone know of anywhere I can buy ready made blinds or curtains for that size of window, or will I have to have them custom made?

Thanks in advance for any tips ...

good god, where are you????

spacedonkey · 28/12/2005 16:45

haha! hello jan

I'm in earl's court - it's a flat in one of those big Victorian blocks (with big windows). At the moment I've got some too-short sheer muslin jobs up from the summer, but I'm cold and need to get something more draught-excluding asap!

I need 260cm min drop for mine and no chance of ready made. They all seem to stop at 230cm for some reason.

Passionflower · 28/12/2005 16:48

I would beg, borrow or steal a sewing machine if I were you.

spacedonkey · 28/12/2005 16:48

passionflower - ikea curtains have a standard length of 300cm if that's any help?

Hi, sd

I was thinking you were abroad somewhere exotic - we had friends in a modern flat in Luxembourg once and they had windows like that. (Not that Lux is exotic but ykwim!)

Are they flat windows? (Not bayed?) I assume you are an unsewer like me but could you buy fabric, turn top over with wundaweb, punch holes in with one of those brass-ring things and put up a metal pole to thread them on to?

spacedonkey · 28/12/2005 16:50

Forgot to add, I am useless at any form of sewing. I mean really, really useless. So if anyone knows of somewhere/someone that makes curtains or blinds ... ?

Actually, good idea about wundaweb jan - even I could manage that I think. Where's a good cheap place to buy fabric?

Lots of curtain suppliers here, some made-to-measure - no indication of prices though.

For people who can sew, curtains are pretty easy - ask around?

merrySOAPBOXingday · 28/12/2005 16:54

You could try the curtain exchange???

If not there are a couple of discount fabric shops around - one of them in croydon IIRC which do a making up service for you.

If you don't fancy that, try one of the on-line suppliers.

I've used ecletics before and webblinds both which were very good!

Look at the ads at the back of the interior design mags for web suppliers.

IKEA used to sell fabric, I haven't been for years, do they still? John Lewis do too but dearer I should think.

Otherwise markets usually have fabric stalls.

noddyholder · 28/12/2005 16:55

habitat do 3m long aswell

bambi06 · 28/12/2005 17:00

buy double the quantity of ikea curtains, at least they`re long enough and having four curtains in stead of two shouldnt look too bad or sew them together side by side but just left hanging side by side bunched up you wont be able to tell probably..

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 28/12/2005 17:43

I used 4 x 3m drop Ikea curtains for a huge window. Looked fine.

spacedonkey · 28/12/2005 18:14

I think I'll try getting some fabric from the market and doing the wundaweb idea. My windows are 3.5 metres high, so ikea curtains are no good

Get 3m drop in, say, a natural cream and add a 50cm band across the bottom in a contrasting fabric like chocoalte suede effect.

spacedonkey · 28/12/2005 18:17

Wouldn't that involve - gulp - sewing?

OP posts:
DoesntChristmasDragOn · 28/12/2005 18:20

You might get away with Wundaweb

NomDePlumPudding · 28/12/2005 18:22

Just a thought, would wundaweb work with the weight of such a lot of fabric ?

spacedonkey · 28/12/2005 18:22

it's a good idea!

OP posts:
spacedonkey · 28/12/2005 18:23

Yes, the weight issue might be a problem - I think the ikea curtains + a 50cm border will do the trick
