Washing machines - AEG or Bosch, anything between them?

I am such a ditherer that I need to be told. Am buying a new machine and have pinned it down to AEG or Bosch - both basic models, 1200 rpm. Can get the AEG one at Comet for 269.99 which appears to be a very good deal. The Bosch is 299 everywhere.

What's the difference? Which is more reliable? Anything between them at all?

Help, all this looking is driving me up the wall!
Thanks

We've got an AEG machine and have had it for nearly 10 years. It's absolutely fantastic. Problems have been minor x 2 ... ie a plastic dial behind the handle splitting from too much use. Other than that it has been running like a dream and, touch wood, still is. I can't compare with Bosch but come the day we have to replace ours I won't hesitate in buying another AEG!

Happy shopping!

I've no idea although we have a fab LG washing machine with a groovy digital display. It has lots of features such as time delay (you can sewt the machine to start a wash upto 17 hours in advance, handy for energy/money saving middle of the night washes) and a child lock (DD has been known to stop it mid-cycle before we discovered the CL option). You can also adjust the wash programmes to suit the load you are doing (temp/spin speed/short cycle option. It has an energy saving grade of A and a wash grade of A. I think ours was around the £380 mark.

I've had LG machines before and have never had any probs (there were concerns about biuld quality a few years ago). I have to agree that those prices sound v impressive for Bosch or AEG.

Sorry about the chronic typos, hopefully it is still legible

We have a Bosch washing machine. Very good and very quiet. Only drawback is that ds (23 months) likes to press buttons and can change the programme - it doesn't have any childlock. I now switch it off at the wall when the programme has finished but then the door will open and he then tries to empty it for me!

Has got a bleeper to let you know that the washing has finished which is quite useful (the washing machine, that is, not ds!!!!!!)

We've got a bosch, only a year old but no problems so far. It is exceedingly quiet, had the shortest wash cycle that we could find (needed quick washes as we both work so only run the machine in the evenings), and a childlock which has saved us from boiled clothes on countless occasions. Oh, and it washes well.

Hi, Tinker! Can't believe you're still looking! (Have you had the space made larger or was that something else?)

Anyway, I've had my basic Bosch (4 buttons and a knob) for about 6 years now, it washes brilliantly and is v quiet like mumbojumbo's and bluebear's. It's in the bathroom, above the kitchen, and unless it's spinning I don't hear it at all.

You don't have to get a man out if the pump blocks either - do have to grovel on the floor with trays of dirty water but can't have everything. It's only happened twice.

Comet online will deliver the £299 Bosch free which is worth £12 (if you want a half-day slot or an early one you'll have to pay a bit more) and will take away the old one if you still have it. I used them recently for a dryer and was very impressed with the website and the service.

Sadly jan, I'm an indecisive Libran. Have decided to, hey, move the cupboard! Thought it was silly to restrict myself to a machine I didn't want. Was managing before because could manuly turn dial to get some sort of wash but now it's died, sometimes spins, sometimes doesn't and now just nothing

Comet online will deliver the AEG for £11 bringing it up to 281 - still very good. That model is about 350 at least everywhere else except Currys.

We have a Bosch and it is excellent. Bought it mainly because it is so economical. You can turn down the number of spins per min if a sunny day thus conserving energy and also (on mine) there is a reduced time button and you can set it on a timer to go on if you are out and about.

We had an AEG oko for seven years. It was the Which? best buy at the time. It's always worked perfectly and washes well. When it eventually dies, we'll just get another AEG.

We've got an AEG, which is now a couple of years old. To be honest I'm not that impressed with it - I don't think it washes that well, & on a few occasions now it's forgotten to pump the water out at the ned of the cycle. Hence I've opened the door not realising & flooded the kitchen floor! Of course, it's out of it's guarantee period....

Metrobaby · 31/10/2003 09:22

We have a 5 year old Bosch that was recommended by Which magazine. Since DD has come along it is on practically every day a week and is still going strong. My only gripe is that the soap dispenser thing can get clogged up.

mammya · 31/10/2003 09:50

As far as I know (from someone who works for German appliances company) AEG and Bosch are much of a muchness. HTH

Tinker · 31/10/2003 10:07

Thanks everyone for the repsonses. Actually went into Comet yesterday and Made a Decision. I plumped for the Bosch just because more people seem to have them than AEG's so if anything did go wrong more likely to get an engineer. Also was thinking along mammya's lines that German appliances are much of a muchness (and seem to be superior).Plus they could do 12 months interest free credit for me. Thanks again
