A quick dig around suggests the keyboard Kindle is much more expensive. It's main advantage appears to be that it has built in 3G (mobile phone) technology, so you don't need access to a wireless network. It also has a full keyboard whereas the basic Kindle just has a few buttons. What the keyboard is used for, I couldn't say.

I believe free books are downloaded from Amazon in much the same way as paid for books, they just have a zero price tag. As I don't have a Kindle (but my wife does) I may be wrong.

Ooh, my kindle is honestly one of the best things I've ever bought. I have a kindle keyboard 3G. The new cheaper version is actually a new model - its only been out a few months and having brought that one out, they renamed what was just the kindle as the kindle keyboard. If I was buying now, I don't think I'd bother with the keyboard version. You can use it to make comments, and highlights and to search for things within the book - but I honestly never touch it. I also don;t really use the 3G - its main purpose it that you can download new bookes while you're not connected to wifi, but as i have wifi at home and at work, I just do it there. Free books - yes you can just download them from Amazon, like you would a normal book - essentially you 'buy them' - you just don't get charged anything for them.

By the way, if you look at Amazon.com (not co.uk) you will see Amazon are bringing out newer versions of the kindle soon - and already have done in the States. The all singing all dancing one is the Kindle fire - but that isn't really just a book-reader, its more like a smaller version on the iPad - and it has a back-lit screen which isn't as good for reading as the e-ink technology on the current models. The one I'll be quite interested in when it comes out here is the Kindle touch - which has a touch screen. I'm so used to my iPhone, that I'm always trying to turn the pages with my finger instead of using the button! I doubt they'll be out here before Chrsitmas though - there's been no annoucment so far.

I have a Kindle, with a keyboard. I don't use the keyboard very often, but it is useful. If you know the name of a book or an author you can search for it by typing in the details.

You can also use the Kindle to access the internet, although it's slow and, because it's only black and white, isn't really an ideal way to do this. Although I have used it to Twitter, in extremis, when bored and my mobile battery was running down too quickly!

If you get the one with 3G, which is the most expensive one, the advantage is that you can download books when you're out and about and don't necessarily have access to WiFi. For me this has been invaluable. I do a fair degree of travelling about for work, and don't always have the foresight to download a book before I go. And when DH and I went to Paris on the Eurostar, and the train broke down for 3 hours leaving us stranded, it meant that I could download another book to read.

Downloading a book is very easy. You select 'go to Kindle store' on the Kindle (there is a simple menu), and then tell it what book you want. Once you have told it to 'buy' the book is sent to your Kindle and will be there within less than a minute. (To be able to use a Kindle first have to set up an Amazon account).

When you look for books, there are lists of books by type - e.g. fiction/non-fiction, crime, horror - etc. There are also lists of free books, and a lot of classic titles are free. However, I have also found that even the ones you have to pay for are often significantly discounted. My recent purchases were around £2 each.

HTH!

By the way, although the Kindle has 3G, which is mobile phone technology, Amazon do not charge for this - you don't have to take out a contract for it.

GooseyLoosey · 24/10/2011 15:51

Depends what you want to use it for and how you see it being used. I travel a huge amount (5 hours a day) so I often want a new book when I am out. The Kindle Keyboard with 3G is the one for me as I can easily buy a new book whenever I want it.

If you just want to use it as an e-reader and are happy to buy the books via another computer with access to Amazon, then I wouldn't bother with the keyboard. Personally would still go for the 3G version to allow faff free download, but then I am very lazy about such things.

I love my kindle.

Balderdabble · 24/10/2011 16:13

It can still be faff free without the 3G - it works in the same way as the 3G does, you just need to be on WiFi - you don't have to be connected to a computer. I can see why it might be useful to have the 3G if you're out travlelling a lot though.

The new kindle still has the keyboard by the way so you can still shop and search in the same way - but instead of buttons, you have to use the little pad to move around the eletronic keyboard, which pops up on the screen. That part does seem a bit of a faff. But then actually I find it is sometimes a bit TOO easy to buy new books - it costs me a fortune :)

PigWhisperer · 01/11/2011 23:29

I think what version you go for really depends on where you are going to be downloading your books. You dont say how old DD is, but if she is on the go and has her own amazon account then 3g means she can download wherever there is a signal and the keyboard makes it easier to do this. If you have Wifi alone you can download if you are in a wifi hotspot - like Mcdonalds/some cafes/libraries etc.

The keyboard interface is quite clunky to be honest, especially if you are used to a touch phone/ipod.

If she will mainly be getting books via the computer (like me) and then sending them to the kindle then you don't need the expense of the 3g or the keyboard and can get a £89 wifi one. This might be easier for you if you want to check what she is downloading?

I have had both:) I gave the old keyboard one to my mum to go travelling with and I was in the states recently so bought the new cheap version that has adverts on it's screen savers. I am just as happy with my £55 one as I was with the more expensive version because I am happy getting my books via the computer and don't need to be able to get them when I am out and about.

This is also a great resource for free books

www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

BUT it doesnt automatically sync the books like it would do if they come from Amazon, you have to manually click and drag them over. pretty easy though.

Good luck!

PigWhisperer · 01/11/2011 23:36

Yikes, I forgot the other differences. the new ones (without a keyboard) are lighter, have less battery life (1 month) and hold 2000 books. the old ones are slightly heavier, have 2 month battery life and hod 4000 books.

One last ting - if you go the keyboard route these refurbished ones from amazon are meant to be very good. Guarantee, Amazon service etc etc

Snackbagofparkin · 02/11/2011 00:05

I've got the new one - you can still type on it - y just have to navigate through an onscreen keyboard, via a button on the kindle. It's fine - quite simple. And means the kindle itself is a bit smaller I think, and you can still download books direct. Wifi is enough for me :)

KatharineClifton · 02/11/2011 00:10

I looked into this for my DC but concluded that there aren't actually many free books. Instead I found out how to reserve library books online so I can get what they actually want rather than selecting from the paltry selection on offer in our local library.

For myself, I got a kindle keyboard refurb. It's great Grin

pramsgalore · 03/11/2011 14:00

Hi, many thanks, she is twelve, but is better than me on the computer Blush i think may be the £89 would be fine as she would be downloading at home and i think she would prefer something a little smaller, thank you so much i shall get dp to read all the posts and see what he thinks as well, as i just get a bit confused with tec, he is already joking that i will not be able to use my sisters old iphone when i get it Blush
