dh wants to introduce colour and drawing....
O think is early---but what colours do you buy at first?

i may be misunderstanding you completely here, but do you mean crayons? if so ds (18m) has been drawing for several months now and loves it. he just uses the big chunky crayons which you can get in packs really cheaply and any old piece of paper he can find. just plonk him in the highchair and show him what to do with them

never too early
dd mastered a regular pencil first (needs less pressure than coloured pencils but less messy than pens); then crayons.

Another for never too early, but make sure that you just let child explore without the expectation of making it "look" like anything.

For painting I know it's the primary colours plus black and white. Crayons - get a pack of 12 and see which they grab.

Colouring in is a no no I believe.

My dd is 18 months and has loved colouring pencils for a while now. We just let her have access to a range of colours and plain paper. She insists on turn taking, so she will have a scribble and then hand the pencil to me for me to draw her a picture, she then has great fun telling me what my drawing is. Not sure any adult would get car or cat from my drawings though!

crayola do some triangular shaped grip crayons and chunky "washable" pens ! Otherwise a megasketcher or aquadraw is a non messy alternative. Stick to a range of primary and secondary colours.

Twiglett · 18/12/2005 09:18

crayola first colouring pens .. washable / rinseable

poster paints (like from elc)

pritt stick and bits of cut up paper

really really not too early .. DD been eating pens since under 12 months

We bought dd some chunky crayons from ELC when she was 18 months ,she loves them and plays with them evry day.

welshboris · 18/12/2005 09:50

DD, 15 months, loves crayons, has for a while.
About 50p from the supermarket, lots of plain paper and shes happy for ages.

Ive bought her a desk with chair attached thing for Xmas, she can scribble to her hearts content then without colouring my cream rug in green!

welshboris · 18/12/2005 09:52

Also got her the aquadraw, I cant wait til she starts playing with it, but etchasketcher start from 18 months. You cant beat crayons and paper though

i say any of the ELC chubbies range would be a good place to start! (try and give the darker colours cause the pale colours like green and yellow hardly show up with baby scribble!)

I wouldnt give them pens tho cause they like to eat them!

great idea my SiL told me was to go to homebase and get a large roll of lining paper. Then you have loads and loads really cheaply.

I also like the ELC crayons, great for small hands to grab.
