Can you use American gift vouchers here in the UK?

MIL wants to buy the kids gift vouchers for Xmas. She lives in America and has suggested Toys r us and Disney store as they have outlets here.
The only problem is that I can't see how a British Toys r us would accept an American Dollar voucher
Any idea what MIL could do?

could she give you the money to buy vouchers for somewhere here?

SpaGlorytoBlog · 15/12/2005 19:41

The amount that she will send will be eaten up by the exchange rate!
I dunno, I think she has just left it too late for sending a gift

She could buy vouchers online for amazon.co.uk? Or does she "do" online?

You can buy (UK) Toys R Us vouchers online, too.

could she transfer the money straight into your bank account? i think she'd still have to pay a fee... but might be easier

I don't know, she is a bit odd. I have to call her back soon.

not accepted as far as i know because they are in dollars not sterling. can she not hop along to a post office and get a couple of tenners instead?

send sterling travellers cheques?
you can definitely do something on amazon as dh has been sent it by an american friend - they key is that it comes electronically by email rather than by post (too late to mail now anyway to get to you by xmas)

SpaGlorytoBlog · 15/12/2005 20:36

I was confused by the amazon one, did your DH buy something off the US site then?
The small print says that you can't use the gift certificates on amazon.co.uk

I think the problem is that maybe she doesn't have a credit card and just wanted to go and buy a voucher.

Try Gap? I'm sure they have a worldwide exchange policy so possibly a owrldwide voucher policy too?

Have spoken to MIL and sent her the links to various websites (M&S, John Lewis etc) and will wait and see!

Disney Store ones definitly can't be used here - even though they have the same name they are run independently. They only accept the ones issued within the UK. Hope this helps !!!
