Cheap or expensive? My new theory.....

I've noticed that if I buy cheap umbrellas, sunglasses, gloves, etc, I always lose them. If I buy expensive things, I keep track of them, take care of them, and have them for much longer. Must admit that I take a deep breath when I buy sunglasses for £100, or an umbrella for £40 but I'm coming around to the idea that it's more economical in the long run because they're not replaced as frequently as cheap things I buy at the market.

Barmy or sensible? What do you do?

Must admit though, that no matter how long I've had an expensive item, I still feel unhappy about leaving it in a taxi (or wherever).

I buy cheap things, it's all I can afford

Bozza · 13/12/2005 10:11

You can loose a lot of cheap brollies before you get to 40 quid. Actually I haven't bought one in years - all mine have been presents.

acnebride · 13/12/2005 11:51

having lost numerous expensive things, many belonging to other people , i prefer to have stuff i don't mind losing, or nothing.

charlietherednosedpussy · 13/12/2005 11:59

If I had spent £40 on a brolly I would have lost my mind
Cheap and often I do.

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 13/12/2005 12:05

I spent £30 - £40 on a Lulu Guiness umbrella. It was a 30th birthday present to myself.
It is beautiful. Black with Parisian street scenes (cafes, boutiques) with pretty green leaves at the top. I love it and will be soooo upset if I lose it.

Earlybird · 13/12/2005 12:09

Well....I have a confession to make. I've had my current umbrella (collapsible with polished wooden handle) for almost 3 years, so I can't remember what I paid for it. Maybe £40 was a bit of an exaggeration......but, in this instance, my theory is working.

this is my umbrella. It was £35. (there's nothing as nice in her collection anymore, I got this photo from ebay).

Bozza · 13/12/2005 12:13

I have had my umberella for maybe 5 years. It was a present but from Next, so less than a tenner. I have a previous present umberella at work which I will have had 8 years and similar cost.

misdee · 13/12/2005 12:14

i spend a lot of sunglasses (75pounds+) but they are perscription sunglasses. but think next year i will get reactions lenses instead.

MoggyMummy · 13/12/2005 12:53

I bought a Lulu Guiness unbrella last year - I had it about a week and left in in a curry house in the East End after a particularly good piss-up. I now buy cheapo umbrellas. My latest one is a 2.99 one from Woolies.

fruitful · 13/12/2005 12:53

I lost my umbrella about 2 years ago. Can't push pram, hold brolly and hold toddler.

How about buy cheap and take care of them?

spruceylucy5 · 13/12/2005 12:54

My gran used to say cheap is dear and dear is cheap.

OLittleTownOfBensmummy · 13/12/2005 20:23

If we are talking generally, not just brollies and sunglasses, I think most of the time cheap is ok and all I can afford, but occasionally expensive means better quality, more suited to my needs, for instance I bought ds2 a trike with air tyres at about £40 more than a cheap trike you can pick up at most toyshops, but it makes a huge difference to how easy it is pushing him where we live.

BibiJesus · 13/12/2005 22:04

Hey, if it works for you ...

what I find is, when I buy expensive things, I tend to look after them well but they go out fo fashion quite quickly and I end up wanting another expensive one pretty soon after without getting a lot of use from it

Mincepiedermama · 13/12/2005 22:06

Expensive. Even it things are second hand I'd much rather get really good posh things which actually last. I hate landfill fodder which breaks in minutes.

harpsiheraldangelssing · 13/12/2005 22:08

cheap
am pathologically forgetful and wasteful
money no object
also, often lose things when drunk and value of item not in forefront of my mind, as often trying hard not to vomit and remember where I live

harpsiheraldangelssing · 13/12/2005 22:08

sorry I appear to be talking like Bridget Jones diary tonight
will try to stop
