Not bad - but its cheaper still to use cloth ones. I bought a pack of shops own jay cloths from Tesco - cost £1. DD2 now 8weeks old and wipes still look like new. I just cut them in half and wet them as I need them. For out and about I have a few in a tupperware pot. You can also make a good wipes mixture using chamomile tea which is excellent for skin. Can't stand the stuff myself so I make DH cup when he gets home. He thinks I'm being nice to him but then I just nick the teabag and make up my wipes solution, then chuck it in the baby bath!

The nappylady sells terry cotton clothes and suggests making your own wipe solution. Similar to codswallop's one. Have been using them for a while now and very good.

I havent made them _ I was flabberghasted that anyone would but now I feel Veeeeeeeery guilty

I cant believe people do their own - I just buy in bulk form tesco when they have BOGOF on their own brand. Persons I should give it a go - ........no...... - cant be bothered

Freddiecat · 21/10/2003 16:36

Hughsie - I wouldn't bother but we use cloth nappies and I actually found it easier to chuck the wipes in with the nappies.

Washed some Huggies wipes the other day because I couldn't bear extracting them from the nasty nappy they'd been rolled up in when we went out. They wash ok.

Hughsie · 21/10/2003 16:38

They are a weird texture the huggies ones and I dont think they are very strong so I'm surprised they washed. perhaps I'm doing it all wrong and may try the bounty options - cant imagine sitting and cutting them all in half though ....bizarre!

Blu · 21/10/2003 16:38

Phew! I am so relieved that you haven't actually made those, Codswallop, it seems like sheer madness to me!

Gem13 · 21/10/2003 16:39

Even easier is using cloth wipes and water - no trips to Tesco! You have to wash the wipes of course but then our washing machine is on as often as the fridge...

Hughsie · 21/10/2003 16:46

Good point!

Katherine · 21/10/2003 18:29

Depends on why you are doing it. If you are doing it to save money then can't see the point of the bounty ones - work and still costs money. I'm doing it for environmental reasons - wipes are made of the same stuff as disposable nappies - just made to feel soft. So therefore much better for me to use reuseable ones. They just go in with the nappies so its no extra chore at all (although I did spend the first couple of weeks neating folding them and hanging them on the airer till I twigged I was then shoving them in a wipes solution. Doh!)

The other thing to think about is chemicals on babies bum. Have you ever read the ingrediants list on a pack of babywipes? Almost all ingrediants are petroleum based. Would I put petrol on DDs bum. No way!

morocco · 21/10/2003 18:33

saves absolutely loads of money - I cut up 2 nappies - total cost about 2 pounds - and they'll last me through my two I guess. I hated more than anything having to chuck money away on stupid stuff like wipes - we used to spend a fortune. That said, it's much easier if you're used to washing nappies anyhow

have been making my own wipes for ages now - but do use store wipes when we're out and about. I add tea tree oil as well. I cut up some old flannel recieving blankets that dd had and chuck them in the wash. Easy peasy. Really! And so cheap. With a second baby I must take this one step further and use cloth diapers.......

I'll def be doing this the j-cloths and water way. My DD has very sensitive skin and so wipes are a complete no-no, but we do use cotton wool and water. It costs us a fortune in cotton wool, so will be snipping up the j-cloths left, right and centre

Demented · 22/10/2003 19:56

We use the IKEA flannels and warm water, bung them in with the nappies, couldn't be easier!
