My lovely DP ordered me a kindle, I've wanted one for ages and I can't wait for it to get here!
Help me pass the time by telling me how great yours is and what you love most about it.
Thanks :)

I can keep it in my handbag for the commute for work without wrecking the handbag zip or shape - try doing that with two paperbacks!
I can also subscribe to the Guardian and read the paper without having to fold a paper in a crowded railway carriage.

Sookeh · 30/08/2011 20:14

I love being able to read one-handed (and I'm not even breastfeeding!), I love that it's so slim and light and slips easily into my handbag, I love how the case's light is so good and doesn't disturb DH in bed if I wake too early, I love how I can have a new book to read at the click of a button, I love that the web browser isso crap that I have no choice but to simply read a book rather than get distracted by the Internet, I love how I can sample before I buy (have definitely saved myself some £££s by trying before buying).

I am a gadget freak so a Kindle makes sense for me. If I wasn't so into gadgets though I still think I'd invest in one as I wouldn't have to cart around massive 500 page tomes in my very nice and expensive handbag!

Brilliant, isn't it? Just wait for the first time you read or hear about a book, think, ooh, that sounds intersting, maybe I'll read it , and 5 minutes later you are reading it. THat freaked me out when I realised what I had done!

huffythethreadslayer · 04/09/2011 00:02

I used to belong to the 'oh, I can't imagine not smelling the pages or feeling the weight of a good book in my hands'. Now I have a couple of books I had on pre-order and I just can't deal with them. The very heft of them puts me off. I can't pick them up and read them during the night, because they don't have a book light attached. They need more than one hand to deal with them. They just don't work properly. (I may even go off and order the same books on Kindle, so I don't have to deal with the paper thing....I'm that sad!).

NormaSnorks · 13/09/2011 19:17

Ooh - I love that I can read lots of samples of the first chapters of books

  • that you can also download audio books to it and listen
  • that I can print work documents to pdf and send them to myself to read without having to carry huge wads of paper around
  • love trying out lots of different magazines for about 99p for three weeks (and then cancelling before they cost me a fortune)
  • Love that I can read without everyone seeing what I am reading (try searching 'Erotic Fiction' and downloading a few samples... Grin )

I don't like that our local library doesn't use an e-book format that is compatible with Kindle Angry

cerealqueen · 13/09/2011 22:08

Hearing about a book and reading it in minutes, reading at night, turning pages with either hand, trying books out, and enjoying so many free books I'd never have bought!

Can anybody tell me how I get Project Gutenberg books actually onto my Kindle?

cerealqueen · 13/09/2011 22:58

I've just found out out how to get all the Project Gutenberg (ie free) books onto your kindle:

Copy this into the web browser on your kindle:

www.freekindlebooks.org/MagicCatalog/magiccatalog.html

Then you can just click and download!!!!!!

Enjoy!

NormaSnorks I'm looking forward to reading my Jilly Cooper books on the bus to work without the evil looks. I'm abroad so they don't know about the greatness that is Jilly, and when they see the front cover they get all sniffy and judgy and I could see the disgusted waves emanating from them (they don't know what they're missing through)

ireallyagreewithyou · 14/09/2011 07:39

I wouldn't say I loved it.
Its ok. The idea of reading a paper on such an unused friendly interface...

You lot need anjp iPad

Cheria · 14/09/2011 07:42

I tried an iPad for a few days and hated it. I can see the use, but it's not for me. Which is why I bought the kindle.

gingercat12 · 14/09/2011 12:10

Where shall I start?

A friend gave my DH a Kindle, which I immediately stole (just to see whether it is working you know). He has never seen it since. I had to buy him a new one for his birthday.

I have downloaded Crime and Punishment from Dostoesvsky as part of the free classics, just to impress DH. I am now officially hooked on his novels and finished The Idiot. Can't wait to read Brothers Karamazov. Is this normal? I have never shown any interest in Dostoevsky before. DH cannot put Chekhov down.

BelfastBloke · 14/09/2011 12:22

Cereal queen: You said how to get Project Gutenberg by typing the address into the kindle's web browser.

Do all kindles have web browsers, or is it only the 3G ones? My DW has just been given one without 3G.

AngelDelightIsIndeedDelightful · 14/09/2011 16:07

They all have browsers. The model without 3G (which I have) needs a wifi connection to use it.

I love:-

  • No longer having to wait for the postman to deliver new releases. Pre-order and then it magically arrives while I sleep.

  • Being able to carry my entire library around with me so if I fancy switching to a different book, then I can.

  • The vast array of 'indie' books that I am only just starting to tap into, most of which can be bought for an absolute song, if not free.

  • The ability to change the font size, so if my eyes are feeling a bit tired I can just whack the size up.

  • Not having to stress about where I'm going to put the next pile of books and wondering if converting the spare room into dd1's bedroom was a good idea when it meant losing all my bookcases I need to start thinking about converting the loft Grin

cerealqueen · 14/09/2011 20:30

Belfastbloe -I have a regular non3G Kindle, look under Experimental in the menu, I think, it should be there?

BsshBossh · 16/09/2011 13:47

ireallyagreewithyou, I have an iPad and use it all the time for web, games, apps but I use my Kindle to read (and I read loads more now I own one) as I find its screen and e-ink technology kind on my eyes.

BsshBossh · 16/09/2011 13:48

Read books, that is. I still read my news online on the iPad or in paper form.

BelfastBloke · 16/09/2011 20:26

Thanks for the tips CerealQueen and AngelDelight
