Abusive sales caller - what would you do?

Unknown to me, my husband spoke to a rep from 'Protectacoat', an external render firm, and gave them our phone number.

I then got two calls at home one afternoon from people asking for him and refusing to leave a message. As he was away, I asked the second caller to leave a message. He would only say it was a 'promotional call' so I assumed it was a cold call. I said 'we don't take promotional calls, could you please take our name off your list?'. I didn't hear the first part of his reply as I was about to hang up, but I heard him shout 'you fucking stupid bitch' before he cut the connection. It was also clearly audible to my seven-year-old on the other side of the room.

Unbelievably they phoned again the next day. My husband answered and they confirmed they had already called, which is how I know which company it was.

I've e-mailed their MD but is there anything else I can or should do?

maybe start a thread called "DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH PROTECTACOAT"?

That is completely out of order - what did your husband say to them?

eemie · 08/12/2005 09:31

He told them that he no longer wanted to do business with their firm after what had been said on the phone - he was rather polite I thought. Hope they tape all their calls.

there are good value and successful methods of repair and cure for problems with damp/render which don't involve high pressure sales man or rubberised coatings

depending on your walls you would be better consulting a reputable plasterer

I made a complaint to the TPS about a company which called me several times & were pretty rude & aggressive. Doesn't really work for you though because your DH had given them the number, however, there's no call for that kind of treatment. If their telephony equipment is half decent, which most call centre type environments will have, they can quite easily track the operator who called you & I'd demand he be disciplined or you'll contact the press etc. What if it had been your son who had answered & he'd spoken to him like that. Try googling them & see if any other threads on sites about treatment etc. That's what decided me to complain about company who called me. I googled the telephone number & tracked it back using name etc. Found loads of people complaining about callers. TPS investigate all complaints although that doesn't help you.
Callers are supposed to advise they have permission to call the person they are seeking although they don't have to identify themselves. My friend does anti-fraud work with a large bank & they get this type of thing all the time as people think they're cold-callers & they can't explain who they are. I'd take it further but I like a good ruck

Oh no stay away from Protectacoat!!!

About 2 years ago we had a guy knock on the door, saying can a guy call in and give you a no obligation quote - they had done 3 doors up and it looked good. So DH said OK.

a few weeks later a guy called and booked a slot - only half an hour would be spent with us.

It ended up being a 3 hour hard sell - my in -laws came round THANK GOD and saved us, but he carried on, when he told u the price £10K to render a 2 bed terraced house - there are only 2 walls!!! You could hear my MIL laughing in the other room.

The sales guy then got in a strop! He was worse than my 2 year old!!

I got a call from the head office - seeing how it went and I complained and wrote a letter but didn't hear anything but I thought I had wasted enough time on this so didn't follow it on.

Is there anything I can do if they ignore my complaint? Some regulator I could invoke? TIA

write again and say ypou expect a reply within 3 weeks or you will be contacting the press. Detail waht action you are expecting and threaten them with the bad publicity. has always worked for me!
