My DS wants a proper camera, having got fed up with disposable ones. Is there a cheap easy-to-use one you can recommend?

I've just bought one for my dd who is almost 8 - I figure it will be cheaper in the long run than having to pay to develop endless quite crap photos = she can just look at tehm on the computer instead (400 photos of dogs and pony!)

I went onto john lewis.com and bought one of the cheapest ones there (can't remember but def under 100). the cheap ones are all point and click and simple for an 8 yr old but you might need to do a bit more research for a 5 yr old I'm afraid.

meysey · 08/12/2005 13:32

point and click sounds pretty good. can you remember the make?

I want one for DD. She is only 4, so would need to be robust. She has a Barbie digital camera, but it is rubbish. It takes 4 photos before needing downloading and you have to squint to see past the pixellation!

I need a camera that has a lcd display on the back so that she can see the photo instantly too.

Will have a look on ebay and report back!
[salutes] SAAAH!

I think a lot of the cheap ones are rubbish for kids as there can be a lot of blur on the pics unless you hold them REALLY still

SpaGlorytoBlog · 08/12/2005 13:48

cute

Enideepmidwinter · 08/12/2005 13:50

very cool

tbh I am buying dd1 a polaroid - she is 6 it will give her instant results and although expensive for film she will love it until she is old enough for a decent digi cam

Enideepmidwinter · 08/12/2005 13:53

this one - very cool for a 6 year old girl I think

mini stickers - the joy

walkinginawinterBundleland · 08/12/2005 13:56

are people seriously buying digital cameras for 5 yr olds??? the cheapo camera enid posted is lovely

ParrupupumScum · 08/12/2005 13:57

My twins LOVE polaroids and so do all their friends. Took two cameras and about 4 films to their birthday party last year and they all took turns taking pictures of each other for about an hour while partner and I sipped beer. Tbh, I wouldn't get a digital camera for mine yet- too expensive. I want them to be begging for one and ready to treasure it forever and ever and ever before spending that kind of dosh!

Enideepmidwinter · 08/12/2005 13:58

and I figure she can always use ours occasionally if she wants to

vickiyumyum · 08/12/2005 13:58

the cheaper dig cameras are rubbish, we brought one for ds1 it was about £50 and as enid says, you have to hold them really steady for quite a while after you have clicked to take the photo otherwise they go blurry.

ds1 actually prefers his cheap £15 mini digi camera from next, it odesn't have the dispaly on the back but it is easy enough to put them on screen and save or delete them, and small enough to put in his pocket and also from my point of view cheap enough that if he does lose it or it gets stolen i don't really need to worry about it as it was so cheap.

i persoanlly wouldn't want my ds to be wandering around with a camera worth over a £50, it also makes thema target for theives (i know a 4/5yo probably won't be out by themselves, but when they get a bit older)

NotQuiteCockney · 08/12/2005 13:58

I think we're buying one for our four-year-old.

The problem is, there are the hardened lovely ones, which cost £200 minimum, and often more like £400. Really nice, but way more camera than I'd buy for a four-year-old!

And then there are the kids ones, which have no screen.

I think we'll buy a £40 one from Tesco or something.

dingdongmeggymooonhigh · 08/12/2005 13:59

Ds(ister) got her dd a fab one for xmas last year (she was 6) it's a sticker one. She was thrilled and as a result has started a really lovely scrapbook. Her holiday pages are amazing (she's really sparked off a creative streak) and she's looking forwrd to xmas and has asked for more scrap books and extra stickers as her pressies.

vickiyumyum · 08/12/2005 14:00

the one ds1 has got is the small keyring one. this one

Enideepmidwinter · 08/12/2005 14:02

I know dd1 will LOVE that polaroid and it has the added bonus of her not having to use the pc

NotQuiteCockney · 08/12/2005 14:02

The Next ones look cool, and ones made out of metal are great ... but the only one with a screen is £99 ...

I think the non-screen ones are all very well in theory, but DS1's got used to taking pictures with my phone, or other people's cameras, so non-screen just won't go.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/12/2005 14:04

I can't face the polaroid, the film would annoy me, be expensive, and then we'd have a whole bunch more bits of paper around the house.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 08/12/2005 16:14

dd's is a proper camera, a Canon, not one of those crappy made for kids ones for £50. Polaroid films are v expensive and dd has her own computer with a card slot anyway so I'm sure it will be cheaper/better used than a conventional camera or polaroid.

I wouldn't buy it for my 5 yr old ds though, I think nearly 8 is about as low as I'd go, age-wise.

I'll tell you how it has all worked out in the new year!

meysey · 10/12/2005 20:57

all interesting stuff. no I don't want to spend a fortune and was hoping to get something for £40 max. I didn't realise you wouldn't get a screen for that though. the polaroid sounds fun but I have one myself, and part of the point of the digital one is to send stuff to family abroad...

will check archive threads and have a good think!

We recently got dsd an Olympus D435 for her 10th birthday. It's great, really easy to use and she's taken some lovely photos with it. Last year dh bought me one of the £50 ones and by comparison it's rubbish. They were half price in Argos at the time and about £85.
