Quality wedding rings

Dh has been through 2 wedding rings since we got married 4 years ago - he has quite a manual job and they bend or break easily.

I was thinking of buying him a new one as a surprise as I know I'm getting a nice diamond for xmas. Where can I get a really good quality one that wont break easily.

The last 2 came from Ernest Jones.

Titanium is brilliant. Extremely lightweight and very very very hardwearing. I think you get them diamond set too. Titanium is very good value for money too.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/12/2005 13:08

The problem is, gold is quite soft, so it breaks easier. You might want a ring that's got less gold in it - 10 carat rather than a higher number? That would be a lower quality ring, ironically.

I think platinum is stronger, as an alternative. (But then it won't match your ring.)

Or as a truly wacky alternative, you could try titanium. It's silvery looking, but very very strong and light. Both DH and I have titanium rings. Oh, it's quite cheap, really, but very hard to work, what with it being so strong etc.

Titanium selection here .

I love my titanium ring, so does DH

NotQuiteCockney · 07/12/2005 13:09

Oooh, NDP, do you have a titanium wedding ring? I've never known anyone else who did. When we first got ours, we used to get people to feel how light they are, it's really quite surprising.

Both DH and I have titanium rings. I can't believe the weight difference to my platinum solitaire.

NomDePlumPudding · 07/12/2005 13:12

Ours are very similar to this, the middle section is brushed, the 2 thinner outer bands are polished

NotQuiteCockney · 07/12/2005 13:13

I don't wear other rings, so I have nothing to really compare it to, but it's just so much more comfortable etc.

Ours were made by a man who normally makes (made) cutlery for the airlines. As we couldn't find anyone in the UK making standard titanium rings, in those days. Looks like things have changed!

NomDePlumPudding · 07/12/2005 13:14

I got married 2.5 years ago

NotQuiteCockney · 07/12/2005 13:14

Those are sweet. We just have plain dome rings, reasonably wide.

I was admiring some of the slightly fancy titanium rings on there, they look very good.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/12/2005 13:16

We got married six years ago? Nearly seven now.

And I went around all the main jewellers in the City, and nobody seemed to know what titanium was. They didn't even seem to do uncoated white gold! But one little independent shop was interested, and got it sorted.

NomDePlumPudding · 07/12/2005 13:17

In fact this is my exact ring from the place we bought it. Mine has a notch cut out for my engagement ring

I really like some of the inlaid ones, really nice.

MistleToo · 07/12/2005 13:17

maybe 9ct would harder wearing - dh has a 9ct and mine is 18ct and we've had them 33 years with no probs - also they cost £9 each from Beaverbrooks

NomDePlumPudding · 07/12/2005 13:18

I love these. Very contemporary

NomDePlumPudding · 07/12/2005 13:22

Lots of nice diamond set titanium bands here

dingdongmeggymooonhigh · 07/12/2005 13:23

NDP where did you get yours cut? I have a Marquise shaped diamond engagement ring and it never sits properly, it looks ok but not great. I'd like to get a new wedding ring too as I think mine was too narrow - very impressed with the Titanium ones, some fab designs.

NomDePlumPudding · 07/12/2005 13:29

I had it done at the jewellers we bought the ring from. I had to leave my engagement ring with them for a week or so but it was well worth it. The adjustment only cost about £15 on top of the cost of my ring.

NomDePlumPudding · 07/12/2005 13:30

I would think that any jeweller worth their salt selling titanium rings will offer an adjustment service. TBH, I wasn't sure how good the notch would be, but it is shaped beautifully with the bottom half of my marquise set ring . I'm very pleased with it.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/12/2005 14:06

Maybe anyone who makes them can, but a normal jeweller cannot cut titanium - their tools won't do it.

Our jeweller was brilliant, but had the cutting done by a cutlery manufacturer. And then wore out lots of files, filing the rings.

NomDePlumPudding · 07/12/2005 14:14

Just found this the jewellers site we bought our rings from. It appears that the place I got mine from also manufacture the rings too.

"In addition to our regular lines we offer a bespoke service for any special orders. We have also introduced a range of titanium cufflinks and bangles.

With the increased popularity of white metal jewellery, titanium is an inexpensive alternative to 18-carat white gold and platinum.

Our rings are available in 4/5/6/7 and 8mm widths, though we can go up to 14mm wide. Our range is made from commercial grade titanium, but we can make any of the designs from aircraft grade titanium for an additional £20.00.
All rings are manufactured on the premises; therefore we can offer a very fast delivery on titanium rings - usually within 72 hours."
