My washer-drier died this weekend. Anyone recommend a replacement.

We've got a Servis - bought it 4 1/2yrs ago and it's still going very well - despite serious overuse

GeorginaA · 05/12/2005 21:05

We've got an AEG Lavamat Turbo which doesn't half take a hammering but is very good. My only complaint is that the drum isn't quite as big as I'd like (6kg) but from what I can tell that's pretty standard for all the washer-dryers.

If you've got the space, go for separates, if not I'd recommend the AEG.

We have a hotpoint aquarius 5+5. What I like of it is that you don't need to do halfloads in order to go directly into drying. Unfortunately it doesn't seem as reliable as our previous Hoover.

If I really wanted to blow the budget on one I would go for a Miele.

Passionflowerinapeartree · 05/12/2005 21:36

The one that died was a Hotpoint and it was good. Am kind of hoping that there is one about with a bigger drum and full load drying. Would love seperate but no space unfortunately, unless - moment of enlightenment - we got rid of the wine rack! Never use it anyway.

Ummm, now there's a thought....

If you can possibly do separates go for it. Really. It's like hifi equipment... you always compromise severely on one of the features if you get an all-in-one

(hell, who am I trying to kid... last time I bought hi fi equipment, ds1 wasn't even thought of... sigh)

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 05/12/2005 21:49

If you can afford it - Miele

Epiffany · 05/12/2005 21:56

don't think miele do washer dryers do they?
But def recommend miele as a washer.
Otherwise Bosch are meant to be ok.

Have been looking on commet. Am now hankering after Bosche. Am a bit worried that it might be more diffecult to get fixed though.

at price of miele, over a grand for a dryer!

GeorginaA · 05/12/2005 22:15

I don't know how true this is, but a friend told me that their washer repair man told them (yes, tenuous link I know, lol) that there are two types of Bosch machines. Those that are made in the UK and those that are made in Germany.

Apparently the ones made in the UK are not as reliable as the German ones. The UK ones won't say where they're from. The German ones will have "made in germany" prominently somewhere.

Epiffany · 05/12/2005 22:22

ahhh but a miele will live for 20 yrs

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 05/12/2005 22:23

We had a Miele washer/dryer. This one I think
here . Was excellent although when we moved house we inherited built in separates and so I gave it to me sister.

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 05/12/2005 22:24

my sister (I don't talk like that!)

GeorginaA · 05/12/2005 22:25

YIKES - £895 and only a 5kg drum?!!!!

REINDEERPOOtlepod · 05/12/2005 22:27

I have a Miele. Best bit of baby equipment i ever bought.

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 05/12/2005 22:32

They've gone down in price - was £1,200 when we go ours. It was an investment when dd was born - had a small house with not much drying space and wanted a good quality machine as I'd heard that combined washer/dryers not generally very efficient.

Blondeinlondon · 05/12/2005 22:37

don't get a smeg, ours is rubbish

Passionflowerinapeartree · 05/12/2005 22:40

Looks lovely except for the drum size. I def need a large drum. Have three kids and a DH who is heavy on his clothes!

OP posts:
GeorginaA · 05/12/2005 22:42

I would say, aim for a 7kg drum if you can - that's what NdP has and she can fit a single duvet in it AND shut the door which my 6kg drum machine can't. I can also get my double bed throw into her machine but not mine. 7kg is a huge difference to 6kg for that reason!

6kg is liveable with, certainly.

5kg. Sorry. But NO WAY!

GeorginaA · 05/12/2005 22:46

Not that I'm constantly over at NdP's house borrowing her washing machine... oooooh no

Did I mention how lovely NdP is?!

GeorginaA · 06/12/2005 11:47

Well that killed that conversation

NomDePlumPudding · 06/12/2005 11:49

lol ! It's good though, we can trade washing machine runs for loans of the carpet cleaner

GeorginaA · 06/12/2005 12:11

Sounds like a fair deal to me ;)

Janh · 06/12/2005 12:27

You can put a dryer anywhere - not just in the kitchen!!!

(Janh mantra)

Get separates!!! A friend has hers in a giant built-in cupboard in her bedroom - I have mine in cupboard in bathroom (v big bathroom) - ideally vent via hole in wall but hose out of window works OK. I seem to have washer and dryer running simultaneously half the day sometimes, would hate to only have one machine.

GeorginaA · 06/12/2005 12:28

Yeah, when my washer dryer dies (hopefully not in the near future, lol!) I have plans to have a dryer in the garage now I can get to it without going outside...
