we've got a mamas and papas primo viaggio and feel our 4 week old is uncomfortable in it. he seems squashed and very upright. he can hardly breath to cry when we put him in it!!!

any views on which alternative to buy ?

i looked on mumsnet 'best ...car seat' section which gives an overall summary but wondered what individuals thought

The problem is not all of them will be a good fit in your car. You would probably be bext pulling together a list and then going and trying them out and getting some good fitting advice.

All i can say is that that car seat did second to worse in the which report for safety for babies! (june 2005)

I would personally swap it for a Britaxcosy tot, maxi cosy cabrio or motehrcare travel tot, all of which did very well in saftey and are recommended by Which?

hi i childmind and have used 3 car seats with the babies i have minded. had a maxi cosi cabrio which was good, but baby was 9 months and could sit up so wouldn't have had the problems you describe, although it said on the seat that you can adjust the depth for smaller babies to lie flater. also had a mothercare urban detour one which was awful. didn't like it because even at 6 months the babies head would fall forwards when she was sleeping. the other one was a jane matrix. this was the best but was the hardest to fit, especially when using the clips in lie flat position. was very comfortable for baby though as he could lie flat and also be used in the upright position. was good as well as the baby could sleep well at toddlers and still be lying flat. used this up to 13 months. anymore q's and i will try and help you. hth

Jane Matrix is fantastic!!!!!!! Worth the money and bit heavy to carry.

hotmulledwinemama · 05/12/2005 13:08

Agree re the Matrix - also lasts until about 15 months. I've only just moved dd out of it at 14 months ( and she is tall for her age) as dd2 is coming in Jan/Feb and I don't want dd1 to feel pushed out.

Got a Maxi Cabrio for dd1 which is fab.

Jane Matrix is fab!..every baby should have one..not easy to fit/carry and uses up alot of space but baby's are so so comfortable. Wouldn't have been without it.

thanks for comments/opinions. think fit in car is the main issue - it doesn't fit in our new car (VW Golf) as well as it did in our old one (old Peugeot 306), it's sort of tilted forward. I will check out the matrix and the maxi cosi.

Read the recent "Which?" report on carseats. It said something to the effect that the lie-flat car seats (like the matrix and the M&P one) do not hold the baby secure enough, especially for a side on impact. As NannyL states it also didn't like the Promo Viaggio one either. Personally I would choose one of the regular rear facing ones. We had a Maxi Cosi Citi (few years ago) and had no probs with it.
