Cot Bumpers

Does anyone know when you're allowed to use cot bumpers nowadays? I know they're not recommended for young babies, but as my baby is now 9 months and keeps waking herself up when she gets her head stuck against the bars of the cot, I was going to get one. Then when I opened the Mothercare catalogue, they say they're only suitable until a baby can sit unaided. Any advice?

Advice on reducing the risks of cot death say 12 months. It's so they don't get their head stuck against it and overheat. Presumably once they are over a year they shift themselves if they get too warm.

I had heard that. But was then flumoxed by Mothercare saying "only until they can sit up" as this rules out all babies over 1 year surely?!

I heard not before 12 months too, but then I also read somewhere that once they can stand you should remove them as kiddie could use them as a booster to escape the cot! Decided not to bother with them at all after that.

Mothercare advise not once the baby can sit up because they can use them to help them get out the cot. And the midwives say not before 12 months to avoid cot death. I think they're evil and should be banned, because I've seen so many people buying really cute ones that will look so gorgeous, but no matter when you use them will pose a risk.

I read that they shouldn't be used under 12 months - risk of over heating of too close, get caught with ties, etc. I think.
