Educational CD-Roms - anyone use them?

Does anyone use these for literacy/numeracy etc with their little ones? I was thinking of investing in one aimed at pre-school/Key Stage 1 level for dd1, and just wandered if anyone has any recommendations or what to avoid. thanks!

dd1 (3.10) loves the Jump Ahead Toddlers one, its really too easy but was great for encouraging her to use a mouse properly. I am going to look in to getting a new one that may be more educational - jump ahead do quite a big range I think, including one aimed specifically at preschoolers.

Yes have been using them with dd for about 2 years now, she loves them, they improve her mouse controll and also help with numbers and other stuff, she can have stories read to her when I'm busy on Mumsnet etc. I love them but then again I also love the Cbeebies website for all of these things.

We have Noddy, Dr Seuss's ABC, Teletubbies, one with a Jack in the Box and a couple of others that get used less so can't remember their names but dd can do them quite well now so must look into buying her some more for christmas.

DS1 likes the Learning Ladder CDRoms from Dorling Kindersly. He's using the age 3-5 at tme moment and the next one up is 5-7.

Thanks ladies! Anyone else? They seem fairly pricey so I wanted to canvas opinion before investing.

Reader Rabbit Nursery ( and then Junior after it) is good, and we also have I Want to Read which is a Dorling Kindersley thing and DS loves. Both were about a tenner I think from Brainworks. DD loves the Jump Ahead things.

Junior magazine have a free offer for a Educational CD-ROM this month (just pay postage type think). Can't remember which one; maybe the Dorling Kindersley one.

Thought it may be worth a look for you.

My girls loved the Jump Ahead ones as well. There are loads available. Another good one is Reader Rabbit. Toys R Us normally has a really good selection. x

We use mainly dorling kindersly. They're really useful and have loads of info. The best are the explorer ones as really interactive and simple enough that certain bits can be used by my 3yr old dd.Also use the I love spelling etc. these also brilliant. As home educator I find I can't go wrong with the DK stuff.

RoninW, I would be interested in buying some. DS 1 who is 4 has my old laptop, and loves playing on it. We only have games at the minute, like Lion King, Pingu, Jolly Postman which he is growing out of.

As he has just started school he is probably ready for the more educational type ones with reading, number skills.

Grommit · 17/10/2003 10:18

Reader Rabbit is very good - and the Cbeebies and Nick Junior websites

LIZS · 17/10/2003 10:31

We've had a few Jump aheads although I was less impressed with the last one Starting School, I think . They are sometimes on offer in Staples in packs of 3 or so. Even the ones like BBC Bob the Builder can be quite educational - problem solving, matching , puzzles etc and ds really had fun with it because it was familiar.

I'm on the look out for a Teaching German to Kids type cd- rom if anyone has come across one (assuming we ever solve the problem on our pc with lack of sound!)

All very helpful. Thanks very much. LIZS, I'd also be interested to see if anyone could recommend cd-roms that are a good intro to foreign languages.
