Swim nappies - what is the discerning baby wearing this season?!

Dd has had first lot of jabs, loves the bath and we're looking to take her swimming for the first time. Looking for suggestions of a good make of swim nappy, preferably re-usable ones. Have seen some in Mothercare and chatted to a pal who said they seem to be ok. Are the re-usable ones all much of a muchness? Would apprecaite any tips etc - thanks!

we have a boots and a mothercare one and both are ok.

the mothercare one is basically like a pair of pants and can be difficult to get off when wet. Ditto, if you had a poo in it i can see it going all over the legs.

the boots one is a velcro opening one with a little tie, which goes on and off better, but tends to be a bit baggy!

Aah, quick question about poo - dd is 11 wks and bf hence runny poos, will these be contained ok in a swim nappy - have visions of it all escaping into the pool .

i think so... i reckon you could probably stick a thin dishcloth in too for added absorbency though!

Twiga · 29/11/2005 21:28

Sounds like an idea - might get some strange looks though !

Twiga - I have been having this very discussion with Serah. I am worried that breastfed dd's poo will escape in a sort of 'poo cloud' around us in the pool . I was planning to use a disposible swim nappy under a reusable one for peace of mind. Let me know how you get on!

tassis · 29/11/2005 22:01

Hi twiga - we liked the mothercare washable ones and have had similar ones from BHS too. Didn't take ds swimming until he was a bit older so can't really comment on the poo.

If you're thinking of swimming in Aberdeen I have to say that the Beach Leisure pool is FREEZING! C hated it the first time we took him. There we were the proud 1st time parents and he just screamed and screamed! We gave up after about 10 mins! Apparently there's a pool in Inverurie with a baby pool that's good and warm. Friends of mine have done successful first swims there!

Suggest you take towel in with you so she can be wrapped up quickly.

Ds loved his swim seat thingy from about 6 months and was still using it at 21 months.

Have fun!

all i can say is that In my experiance poo is a disater in a swimming pool nappy or no nappy!

The ONLY way ive found of containing most (not even all) of it is a huggies little swimmer with a reusubale swim nappy on the top.

I forget the brand.... NOT aquanappies (hopeless) but one that sort of velcros together then ties together with a bit of string as well

misdee · 29/11/2005 22:11

i have a red one, ffp? its a kooshie swim nappy i think.

NannyL · 29/11/2005 22:11

Just reread thread. IMO not a chance of breast fed poo being contained in swim nappy NO WAY!

they also dont absorb wee! (as you will find if you are carrying baby to pool and they do a wee!)

Twiga · 29/11/2005 22:23

Looks like a trip to the pool with a tiny baby is fraught with potential hazards then?! Think I'll risk the potential poo based embarrassmetns - dd adores being in the bath and really splashes about so I think she'll love the swimming pool. Reckon I'll make sure I go with dh then we can be embarrassed together should the worst happen besides it'll make for good stories to show her up with at her 18th !!!

Thanks for the tip re: beach leisure pool Tassis that's where we were gonna head but dh is saying may as well have a drive out if it'll make for better experience all round - also less chance of being recognised if the worst happens .

The ones with velcro sides are definitely better in a tricky poo situation.

Twiga · 29/11/2005 22:27

cheers cod - from Starlovers chat sounds like a good option as regards removing it after - could maybe get with points too!

I go swimming with my breast-fed 4 month old. We're doing water babies and she wears a Huggies swim nappy with a Splash About neoprene nappy (from water babies) on top, which apparently holds everything in!

Twiga · 29/11/2005 22:34

thanks for the links!

Mrsdarcy water babies looks fantastic but we're miles from the nearest one unfortunately or I'd be right there with dd - we're in Aberdeen, nearest edinburgh . Was it you who posted an amazing pic of their baby underwater?

kooshies swim nappy is what we used, had 3 in differnet sizes (very important).
They cost £8 each but were well worth it. 3 children wore them from 4mo to 2 yrs.
DS2 even tested out the pooh-retainign capacity (lol) and I can confirm that it was good - as long as I realised at once (and I always did) we just got out of the pool and it was all in the nappy, honest!
The elastic round the legs is the key, also the correct size.
DS2 totally b/fed BTW. Should add that he only poohed in the swim nappy about 3 times, not every time we went!

mrsdarcy · 30/11/2005 09:43

Twiga, no, it's not my DD's picture. We're getting underwater pictures taken next week though .

Too bad about there being no Water Babies near you. I don't know if Aqua Babies or Little Dippers do classes around Aberdeen?

Eulalia lives near Aberdeen too - she might know about baby swimming classes.

mandymac · 02/12/2005 13:30

Bad news I am afraid. I met someone yesterday who worked on the advertising account for pampers for a few years. I asked him if swim nappies work (he also has 2 small children). He just laughed like a drain and said no! You just have to hope that you time your trip to the pool well!

BeanieBabe · 02/12/2005 20:30

we've also done water babies and go to the local pool too. They all insist on desposable swim nappies at the very minimum and we always use a kooshies on top and have not had any accidents

I think that the water is just cold enough to prevent the babies being relaxed enough to poo but I have to say that I spent the first few months stressing if dd's large morning poo hadn't happened before swimming time lol

Twiga · 24/12/2005 14:24

So, here's the promised up-date....

....took dd swimming finally yesterday - was waiting for dh to be off work. It was fab !!!

Top tip on the pool at Inverurie Tassis it was warm enough that we spent half hour in the water in total. The pool had wee toys - ducks, watering cans etc which meant dd really got to explore being in the water and the water is only waist deep which made it easy for us to support her etc. changing facilities excellent - big family cubicles with changing benches in them.

We ended up with a swim nappy which we bought in babies-r-us - pink gingam with a frill at the bum - very cute! No poo probs which was great for our first time, think I would go with general concensus and say suspect nappy wouldn't cope with bf poo but hopefully will never happen - who am I kidding !

Dd just loved it and splashed around maddly - just like a giant bath to her. We also took a baby float seat for her which she seemed to like and it gave her a different position to kick in - could move quite far unaided in this. Also seemed to enjoy drinking the pool water at every opportunity. We had a great time and are hoping to take her regualarly - no tbrave enough to go by myself for a while as lot to do on the changing quickly front etc. Thanks again for all your comments and advice , have a fab Christmas!
