Hi, My little fella arrives in December but already thinking about monitors etc. The different selections are vast as are the prices. A bit skint at the moment so don't want to spend more than I have to. Is it a case of getting what you pay for and are all the "extras" really necessary. Any tips would be great as have to buy online asap to get it over to Egypt in time. Cheers.

I was paranoid about cot death - like most people, I'm sure - so we bought a v expensive one that had a sensor pad to fit under the mattress - if the baby doesn't move for xx (can't remember) of seconds the alarm goes off. The alarm went off all night, very loudly, and we nearly had numerous heart attacks. Maybe we weren't using it properly and others (particularly if anyone has ever had the tragedy of a cot death) do find it useful but it turned me into a hysterical wreck. Lots of luck with your baby and hope you all have a wonderful Christmas together.

We have a Safety 1st video monitor and think it's fabulous. It's a bit expensive, and if you have a cordless phone, it gets static, but we're really happy with it. If you don't think you'll need the video, you can get monitors for really cheap, and as I understand it, they're all pretty good.

A friend lent me the the 19.99 phillips one (argos). It was very good. But I wanted one with a monitor to go under the baby to detect movement/breathing. We had a cot death in our family so was worried about this.

I bought the Angelcare on which detects sound & movement. have not looked back since. If you are sleeping and your baby doesn't move for 20 seconds it sounds a very loud alarm (God forbid).

I have to say that I have slept alot more soundly since I have had it.
