I was taught (by my grandmother) to clean patent shoes with a bit of butter on a cloth.

Used to clean mine with a bit of kitchen towel soaked in milk , but no advice on vaseline, sorry!

My DDs are 23 and 20 and I was definitely told to put Vaseline on their patent shoes when they were little. Information must have dried up!

My DH puts vaseline on his patent dancing shoes - to stop them sticking when they pass, while he's dancing

Ive never even heard about this vaseline thing!

I think it's silicone more than petroleum jelly that would do the trick (although may have my chemistry wrong here)... pledge should do nicely, LOL.

In the 80's when patent shoes where right in fashion, the shoe shops used to try & sell you special cream to keep them soft. My friend worked for Dolcis & told us all that Vaseline did exactly the same thing. It did too, I could still wear them today, I'd look like a bit of an arse but they'd look good as new.

hub2dee is right! clarks sell a silicone wax (£2.50 i think) which is really good for patent leather. keeps it nice and supple and stops it splitting

have no idea about vaseline... but if it works and is cheaper then go for that! lol
