refused a refund

I've had to take a jumper back to a small local shop that specializes in school clothes and have been refused a refund.THey would only offer me a credit note as there was nothing wrong with it (my dd hated it).I expressed my dismay and the woman said that she told me it could be exchanged when I bought it,not refunded.I now know that I have no choice but to accept this but it really pisses me off. They have now lost all my business,oh wait I will have to shop there as they are the only suppliers of the local school uniform when my ds starts at the infants.Has anyone else come across this ludicrous way of business?

polly, the big stores do refunds on returns because they can afford to - they don't have to either, legally, as robin says - small shops can't afford to do it and are being generous with the credit note.

Take DD with you next time! (Could you buy her a larger size in something and use the credit note that way - I think they have to be used within 6 months?)

Guess I have to accept it ,hard though as we have a small family business ,two shops and we do try to please the customer so they will come back, not be so pissed off they rant about it to all their friends.I do understand that they can't afford to do it a lot but I have been a regular customer for years this is the first time I've ever asked for a refund as I honestly don't need anything in the shop at this time, will do in a year or two maybe.
