Playmobil or Sylvanian Families ?

I want to replace DD's ELC HappyLands stuff with a more poseable type of dolls house type range, as she gets frustrated but the non-poseable figures and the fixed furniture.

I like both the Playmobil & Sylvanian Families, I personally prefer the Sylvanian Families and used to collect it all about 20 years ago (when it first came out).

I get the feeling that the Playmobil is going to be a bit more hardwearing though, having said that my Mum still has all the Sylvanian stuff in fab condition so it can't be that fragile. DD is not as careful with her toys as I was (according to my Mum, anyway).

Am I right to think that the sensible option is the Playmobil stuff as it's chunkier and a bit more handwearing ? But it is soooo expensive.

DD will be 3y4m at Christmas.

Playmobil, I think. I know if I get the house or the castle for dd, ds will want to play with it, too. How can I keep them from fighting over it? Maybe one each? As their main pressie. Dd also wants a microphone (!), a play kitchen & a bath for Baby Born.

NomDePlume · 19/11/2005 10:44

sansouci, my DSs are 13.5 and 12, so I've not go to think about that !

I can't wait until the fighting/screaming stops!

NomDePlume · 19/11/2005 10:47

lol, I'm not sure it does !

Thank goodness for mumsnet! I am getting dd an ELC dollshouse (the Georgian one) for her birthday in Feb but wasn't very keen on the furniture that goes with it. I never considered getting the lovely SF accessories!
One question - do you think the scale of them will be too small for the house?

EnidEatsPeasWithACocktailStick · 19/11/2005 11:57

dd2 has all her playmobil stuff in a plan toys wooden house - tbh it is too small but she doesnt care

NomDePlume · 19/11/2005 12:00

I don't think so cupcakes. I was condsidering doing the same thing, especially now that the ELC main house has £20 off. I don't like the plain ELC furniture and thought that the SF stuff would be perfect.

Where do your kids keep all this Sylvania and Playmobil stuff? The SF stuff looks gorgeous but unless they have a huge playroom where it can all be set out permanently does it just end up in a heap in the toy box? I know dd would love it but I just can't work out where all the houses etc could be stored.

NomDePlume · 19/11/2005 12:12

I've got a big chest (!) in the living room where it all gets packed away neatly. No cavernous playroom here !

dd2 has a big wooden dolls house on a Ikea storage chest - the dolls house goes on top and the bits and pieces go in small boxes in the big pull out boxes under the storage chest. It is in her room.

NomDePlume · 19/11/2005 12:21

Enid, I can't put toys in DD's room, she'd be sneaking out of bed at all hours to play with them.

lol

yes dd2 does this occasionally

although she likes to put them all to bed before she gets in (seriously takes over half an hour)

My friend has superglued all the small playmobil bits together such a good idea

NomDePlume · 19/11/2005 12:23

lol @ gluing the stuff together.

shes glued all the icecreams into the ice cream seller trolley

and all the bangles and things on the kings

and all the medical bits into the ambulance

NomDePlume · 19/11/2005 12:43

I did that with a balamory playset that DD got, I glued all the tiny cups etc to the tea tray.

FWIW dd (now 7) has always been a big Sylvanian fan, and has a lot (like, really a lot) of sets. She has actually liked it more since she was 5 or so- before that she didn't really pick up on their cuteness as much, although she did still play with them. To my surprise she's still erally keen on Playmobil, to the extent that she is getting the "mansion" for Christmas (we have just about run out of SF things to get her!). So I suppose I wouldn't stress too much, she could have both on the go in the longer term. I would say they are equally sturdy really. Good fun, innit

NomDePlume · 19/11/2005 13:08

it is, tamum, I get to relive my childhood vicariously through her

tamum · 19/11/2005 13:09

And I get to play with SF because they hadn't been invented during mine

Buying for girls is sooo much more fun than it is for boys (and before anyone shoots me down for being anti-boy, I have 2!)
