How long do you expect startrite shoes to last?

I have just looked at my DDs startrite shoes (year 1)(£36) tonight that were bought for new for September term and the front sole is coming away, about 2-3 cms,is off and hence why she is getting wet feet!
Unfortunately I bought them at John Lewis and my nearest one is a good hour away in a car so it wouldnt be worth taking them to have them checked..
Is it reasonable to be now falling apart(about 2.5 months) or should I phone up and complain? any thoughts - i would be grateful..
i suppose I dont mind buying a new pair for after xmas - but I dont want to have expense when i dont need it..thanks

Sounds a bit poor - dd's (Reception) are still fine, if a bit scuffed and worn around the heel from the slide. Hers are chunky soled and cost about the same. They wear them all day, inside and out, so take a fair bit of punishment.

childrens shoes should last untill they outgrow them imo.

mummytosteven · 18/11/2005 19:31

agree with Misdee. worth having a go at phoning up to complain - or even better, how about e-mailing the customer services department, and attaching a photo of the decrepit shoes?

She doesn't ride a bike in them and use her toes as brakes, by any chance? (DS2 did - went right through the toes)

Hi Amylou, I won't buy startrite shoes any more for DD unless I absolutely have to as I've found the quality very poor. Only ever bought them twice, but both times dd had worn them out within about a month. And with one pair I found that within the first 2 days the innersoles had comeaway & they were consequently all lumpy with the grit/stones that had got under there

Hulababy · 18/11/2005 20:55

DD's last much longer. Infact she grows out of them, rather them being worn out. We have started buying Startrite because they wear better.

I think it depends on the child rather than the shoes. DD1 wears them until she grows out of them or the seasons change, ds1 needs new ones every 2-3 months as he goes through the sole of one of them with scooting.. Keep wondering if he'll end up with one leg bigger than the other, his scooter is like a third leg (or something )

handlemecarefully · 18/11/2005 23:58

Should certainly last longer than 3 months!

amylou · 19/11/2005 12:09

Hi thanks for all the replies..! she only wears them for school so theres no damage from bikes or scooters.
This term i bought startrite as they seemed more hardwearing than clarks.. Last easter I bought a clarks pair and they started splitting on the heart that was cut out on the side of the shoe and ended up getting those replaced..
maybe we are just better buying cheap pairs from woolworths!
Anyway i did phone john lewis this am and have put them in the post to the manager so will let you know the outcome.

Having read your post, I checked my DS's one month old Startrite shoes to find the sole is coming away from the upper. They've only been worn to nursery so haven't had hard use. Will take them back.

amylou · 23/11/2005 17:39

hi - just to let you know john lewis refunded me for the shoes so that was a good outcome..
So we are off to the shoe shop now to get another pair! lets hope they last a bit longer!
