Isofix car seat, help should I buy it?

A friend has just offered to sell me her Renault isofix car seat for £50. It is a forward facing from 9mths one I think. What appeals to me is that it has a sort of padded tray to secure the child instead of the three point harness. DD3 keeps removing the shoulder straps when in her britax eclipse and this is driving me mad.

Basically does anyone have any experience with this sort of seat or any advice. Should I buy it?

buy. these are better than the standard seat and will no doubt be mandatory in future. the isofix is welded directly to the car frame and is apparently alot safer. the reason many people still don't buy them is because 1. they don't have isofix or 2. they are more expensive.

starlover · 18/11/2005 12:54

yes! i would DEFINITELY have got an isofix one if our car had isofix poitns! much, much safer

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 18/11/2005 12:54

oh, and we don't have one because they haven't fixed isofix in the middle seat of our Y reg renault. the new renaults i think have them on all seats but don't quote me on that.

Is it a Uk approved one - sounds very European in style. The one I saw in the dealer showroom the other day was a thinly veiled Britax Duo Isofix. The one you describe sounds like it may come from its German-based sister company, Roemer, or another European manufacturer. Sounds like a good deal if you are happy and it will be compatible with your car though.

rhubarb!

It is quite an old one I think and the covers are quite tatty but it fits my VW Touran perfectly. I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts about the lack of child harness. It's not something I've come across before, the padded tray looks very secure.

From what I remember when a friend had one in a hire car in Switzerland you still use the adult belt and put the tray across. Only buy it if you have the instructions or the manufacturer can provide duplicates as I think there is a definite knack to fitting it and child correctly.

I have a 0-9 month isofix car seat and I love it, but I have to admit that I would be really nervous about a car seat that doesn't have a harness. Can you find out if it is/has been sold in the UK? If so, it will meet the UK safety requirements, but if they've never sold it in the UK then that is almost certainly because they can't - ie. it doesn't meet safety criteria. Sadly that would be enough for me to say thank you but no thank you.

so renault has 3 isofix points (sorry for the hijack)....we're planning a third baby and I've been keeping my eyes out for something that will be as secure for all 3 kids!! Is it true?

Passionflowerinapeartree · 18/11/2005 13:58

Was bought through local Renault dealer, Channel Islands not UK and I can get the instructions booklet.

Spent 2 1/2 hours in showroom on Monday , waiting for ours to be fixed, and the new Scenic, for example, did seem to have Isofix in the middle too. A Megane we hired in the summer had them on the front seat too so presumably you can deactivate the airbag. Whether there is sufficient room to get 3 fulls seats across using Isofix I'm not sure (and you may need to cut through the fabric to find the mechanism!) but I can get a forward facing seat, highback booster and booster cushion across my old style one, 2 seats of which have Isofix although we don't use it.

Passionflowerinapeartree · 18/11/2005 16:45

Well, I'm not going to buy it, just tried it on the school run and DD3 spent the entire journey shrieking "DON'T like it!, DON'T like it!

Our Renault Laguna Estate has 3 isofix points (I think one front, two rear). But BE AWARE you need to cut through the seat to reach them. The dealer did this free of charge, but I was really annoyed, as in other cars (e.g. my dads Discovery and my sisters Yaris) the clips are accessible without any cutting. We had to go to three Renault garages, before we found one that knew what to do!?!?

We have an Isofix car seat - 2 in fact - and much prefer them to normal car seats. They are so much safer and so easy to fit.

We have used the Britax Duo Isofix - about to sell that too, as DD is getting a new seat for my car.

£50 is a good price, the Britax is selling for in excess of £75 on ebay.
