About to buy my DD her first bed - Any advice?

I'm researching beds for DD at the moment and I am not sure where to go so thought as per usual to come on to Mumsnet. My friend has got this one but once you add up all of the other things you need to get it as just as costly as getting a normal bed. I like the look of this one but I'm not sure - Any advice?

How old if your DD?

MummyJules · 11/11/2005 17:32

She has just turned 3. Eventually I want to get her one of those bunk beds with a slide but obviosly she is too young for that so just want to get her a bed until she is old enough.

Get a normal sized one! And then a side thingy to stop her falling out. DS2 is in a M&P cot-bed which is lower than a regular bed but IMO he would have been fine with a normal bed. Also means that you're not having to buy another one in a couple of years.

Get a normal bed and put the money into a good quality matress as currently she will spend almost half her life in it. Ds wouldn't sleep in his bed until we removed the safety rail.

Get a Flexa ! - you can start off as a full size low bed and then get legs, ladders and slide etc for later on. Not cheap though

we got a normal sized single bed from alphabeds in Tottenham Court Rd - not cheap but very good quality and will last a long time. It probably works out the same price as getting a little bed woth smaller bedding etc which you then have to swap for the full size stuff later on!
They will make up any of their frames in the colour /style you want , ditto with the mattress you want.

We swear by these We have four of them in the house - at the start you can use cot-size duvets on them, then they extend in 2 stages to full length but not so wide as a standard bed - about 80cm I think. Dd1 and ds1 (tall 9 and 8) have good sprung mattresses on the original bases, and dd2 and ds2 (4 and 3) have them in the mini sizes still. The mattress comes in three parts, and at the start the end bits act as cushions at the head and the foot of the bed. We always thought we would buy 'proper' beds for them later, but haven't seen the need yet! Full size beds are enormous, unless your dd has a huge bedroom?

Get a Thuka - cheaper version of flexa but just as sturdy

Passionflowerinapeartree · 11/11/2005 18:40

I reckon same as bobbybob. Full size bed with a decent matress.

And really lovely cotton bedding. Might as well start out appreciating the finer things in life.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. Any idea where I can get some nice duvet covers? Don't particuarly want ones that have got lots of white in it for obvious reasons!
