Frost free or not?

I have to buy a new freezer and am not sure whether to go for a frost free or not. Is there any reason apart from the cost of not having frost free?

I have a frost free - best thing ever cos I don't have to spend hours of my life every 6 months or so with a hairdryer, twenty towels and ice flows sailing past my feet... Oh, and I can actually OPEN the icecube drawer - it's a modern miracle I tell you!

rummum · 09/11/2005 21:52

definately get a frost free... can't be arsed with the defrosting....

PrettyCandles · 09/11/2005 22:00

Ditto! Frost-free is soooo much more convenient and a more efficient use of your valuable time than f*rting about with iced-up drawers and defrosting.

Shazzler · 09/11/2005 22:01

Is that worth paying at least £80 more?

GeorginaA · 09/11/2005 22:02

God yes...

ionaming · 09/11/2005 22:04

Definitely worth the extra £80!

Lmccrean · 09/11/2005 22:06

get advice on which one before buying! my frost free freezer requires defrosting every 3 months... its second hand, but was my parents, so know it was looked after. only about 5 years old!

expatinscotland · 09/11/2005 22:06

Aren't the ones you have to defrost bad for the environment?

Shazzler · 09/11/2005 22:12

HOw can it be frost free AND require de-frosting every 3 months?

AFAIK frost free = more electricity (no ice to insulate from external heat) = bad for environment. But frost ones become less efficient as they frost up - and a helluva lot smaller so can cost just as much to run as frost free?

Check them out in the showroom too - we got a Zanussi/Electrolux. I wanted an AEG but we found the Zanussi was IDENTICAL in every way except slight superficial stuff - must be made by the same people and rebadged and was much cheaper.

GeorginaA · 09/11/2005 22:14

Check the efficiency rating - probably the best way to compare.

Janh · 09/11/2005 22:18

How big are you looking at, Shazzler? I have a Bosch worktop height freezer and defrosting it only takes a couple of hours, it has a little nozzle at the bottom that the water runs out of and the top drawer, which is v shallow, tucks underneath.

Frost-free is worse for the environment but, as you said, iced-up ordinary ones are bad too (and if SOME IDIOT in your house doesn't close it properly it turns into an iceberg overnight and then you have to defrost it willy-nilly )

Shazzler · 09/11/2005 22:19

perhaps.
but the frosty one get worse as they frost up.
have to work harder.

So I'm rold anyway

Ah, and door closing brings me to another top tip - get one with a temperature/door open alarm!

Dh didn't close the door properly last week after putting the shopping away, fortunately the alarm going off meant that we didn't lose an entire freezer load overnight...

Shazzler · 09/11/2005 22:23

Looking at worktop height one.
We have a BEKO fridge freezer the now.
One of the 6 foot jobbies (snigger)
So have to buy seperate freezer and fridge now.

Fancy this fridge or maybe even this one, but not sure about the freezer?

First one has glass shelves, I would go with that.

Show us the freezer!

moondog · 09/11/2005 22:28

'Show us the freezer!'

Boy oh boy JanH,that must take the prize for dullest sentence ever on MN!
And an exclamation mark to boot!

moondog · 09/11/2005 22:30

No offence but honestly-!!!

(Bet it's not as boring as mine. I'm ironing 10 of dh's shirts tomorrow. Yawn......)

moondog · 09/11/2005 22:31

Janh · 09/11/2005 22:32

Oh thanks a lot, GDG!

I bought lots of bags from the same place I got my vac, and I use it so infrequently (ahem) I haven't run out yet, so I can't help with this particular boring query

Gobbledigook · 09/11/2005 22:33

YOu use the hoover infrequently

BLimey - twice a day in this house! Mind you, I do have crumb producing toddlers - drives me nuts!

Gobbledigook · 09/11/2005 22:34
